Lloyds bank charges

I'll keep this as short as i can because i need some advice -

My bf went overdrawn on his Lloyds account, and set up a payment plan of £20 a month to pay the money back. Because he was on a payment plan Lloyds stopped all charges on the account. The payment plan came to an end in October (it was set up for 6 months) and he rang up and set it up again over the phone for another 6 months and £20 came out of his account like usual at the start of November.

He has received a letter from Lloyds today saying that he is over his overdraft limit and is being charged £20 a day!!! That's £100 in the time it has taken the letter to get here (PLUS a £15 'admin' fee). He has just rang their call centre and they said they had no record of a payment plan, and could not answer when he questioned why £20 had been taken out of his Nat West account to pay Lloyds at the start of November.

How can they do this?? And what can we do now about it? At £20 a day by the time a letter reaches them and we receive a reply he could owe hundred of pounds  The lady in the call centre was no help whatsoever saying she could set a payment plan up now but would not be able to refund the charges......

First step is to open up a new account elsewhere with a bank that's not connected with Royds, and use that one for everything instead. Then deal with the charges issue after that.

Does your BF have any written proof of the payment plan? Did he receive a letter setting out his monthly repayments? If not, it's his word against Lloyds by the sound of things. He should write a letter to their complaints department, detailing everything that has been done on his acccount since setting up the repayment plan. He could send copies of bank statements showing the £20 monthly payment. Did he take the name of anyone that he spoke to when they agreed the plan, or did he note the date and time of the call?

It sounds as though they have reduced his overdraft limit, which is why he is now getting charged the daily fee. Unfortunately, the different departments within the banks do not seem to speak to each other (possibly because they are in different countries ) so you need to go direct to the complaints department. See the details here...

He could telephone them but he would be wise to put everything in writing also, and to keep a copy. As he has found out, anything agreed on the phone can be completely forgotten/ignored at a later date. Good luck!

Many thanks for the replies, I'm definitely going to put everything in writing (I tend to do any letters like that, he's no good with confrontation), he has the date and time of the call because it was on his mobile (love modern technology!) He's long since set up an account with Nat West so has evidence from that end the payments are being taken, and obviously the Lloyds statements show that the payments are going in to the account.

In the meantime he's going to set up ANOTHER payment plan (Confirmed in writng this time!), and then try and request the charges back in writing after that and make a massive complaint. Hopefully it will all be paid off soon, I'm going to lend him the majority of the money just to get rid of them!
  • Where exactly did he phone?
Was it the normal telephone line 08453000000 or was it the Collections centre number.

The normal number do not have access to collections notes on their screens.

I would advise ringing Collections and asking for those charges to be waived and set up the repayment plan (again).
