Nationwide Basic account - no more Online Banking - HELP

Options
Hi all, just realised that Nationwide's new card readers they are launching for online banking are going to be made mandatory and will ONLY work for people with Debit cards - so effectively basic account holders are going to be completely locked out from internet banking.

Anyone know how long until it becomes madatory, and can anyone suggest a decent alternative bank/BS with online banking that is not planning on launching card readers, or at least will make them available to those with a basic account and cashpoint card.

I am FURIOUS with Nationwide.... not looking forward to having to change bank account details on everything :(

i've got the coop cashminder account, this is a basic one with online banking, and the card works in the card reader....
  • im not sure, ive had all my cards re-issued with chips in them, and my assumption was that they were doing it due to using the card readers. i know i was told that if you didnt have a card reader then you would have to do a two-step log in procedure.

Agree with Conf, coop cashminder comes with online banking and a card reader.

I don't think that is the case?

People with the normal Flexaccount with full Visa debit card with have the new readers issued.

Normal basic account customers (with or without the CashCard+ debit card) will still be on the old system for the time being where login is via memorable data and a pass number.

If that is the CashCard+ debit, then they still won't need the reader.

    Not yet anyway.

Why aren't you introducing Card Reader sign on for all Internet Bank users?

Following the introduction of Card Reader sign on for Visa debit card users (excluding cash card+), Nationwide will look to introduce this security measure for other accounts. It is important to understand that our existing level of security for customers who sign on using their memorable data and passnumber is extremely high.

  • Thanks yes there's going to be a new 2 step login but it's only temporary until the reader becomes mandatory.

I have a cash plus card with the chip, reissued recently, maybe they will let me use this, I have contacted them. However the website specifically says it is excluding cash cards AND cash card plus.

Fingers crossed and see what they say, otherwise it looks like it will be the Coop. I banked with them in the past (before bankruptcy) and really liked them esp. their ethical stance.

I think that is the plan.

Nowhere does it say that they are going to stop people using internet banking. Just that people with the basic account will stay on the old system for the time being.

I think concluding that they are going to remove internet banking is reading to much into it and a bit premature.

  • re-reading the section you posted, Fermi, it looks like you are right. I hope so. Hopefully they will clarify when they reply to my email. In fact, I think that means full Flexaccount holders get the rough deal, because they will have to lug the reader around with them everywhere they want to log in once it becomes mandatory for them.

I work for nationwide. They replaced all cards recently with either a Cash Card Plus or the Cashbuilder card was replaced with a chip in it. This is so they will work with the new card reader process. It is not yet mandatory, you will need to enquire why you haven't received your new card yet, or you should get it soon anyway. Don't panic! oh and please don't take out frustration on the staff, its not their decision and your card has been replaced - not our fault if you haven't received it yet :) good luck!
