Games Consoles

Hi
Hoping someone can give me some advice. My 12 year old son wants to spend his birthday/christmas money on a Games console. He wants a PS3 but they are a serious amount of money. Why are they so much more than the XBox and do you really get any more for your money? As DS said to me to today "mum you dont get games consoles" and I think he is right.
Any advice of where to buy would be good too.

They are so expensive because people keep buying them, As soon as sales drop so do he prices.
Good business sense.
Buying 2nd hand is risky. If the machine breaks then it may cost more in the long
run than buying a new machine.
Then after being stung for the machine, You need several arms and legs for games. Dont forget
extra controllers and other equipment needed to play some games.
Bought my daughter a wii several years back, She has games still in the sealed wrapper. Never
given them a 2nd look.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Try and convince him to get an Xbox. There are some very good offers on at the moment too.0

PS3s are the much better piece of technology and play bluray discs unlike an xbox so you are getting two things in one box as it were. (assuming you have an HD tv, etc). While the game choice may be slightly more limited Gran Turismo 5 will shortly be released for PS3 only which I think is personally would be a reason to buy a PS3 on its own... Also if your son wants to play online then I believe that you have to pay for ann xbox subscription whereas this is not the case on the PS3 (at least the games I play online). Given it is his money I would let him make his own choice, if he regrets it later then it will have taught him about the value of money0

The PS3 is has come down a lot in price since it was released 3 years ago, I bought one on release day for £425 and at the time it had nowhere near as much applications available as it does today.
The PS3 is a multimedia device, not just a games console. Just some of the advantages over XBOX/Wii are :
you can stream music and movies from your computer straight to the console
full access to the internet
Bluray Player
Free online gaming for all games
10 year production lifespan (this means games and applications and firmware will be released for a minimum of 10 years. It does not mean that each individual console is guarenteed to last 10 years nor does it mean that another console will not be brought out for 10 years)
HOME - which is a fully interactive social space which is free
Platinum titles starting from £15.99 new
Minis on playstation store, small games all costing less than £5
3D capability (would need a 3D TV for that though but it is one of the reasons it is more expensive than XBOX)
Upgradable hard drive (XBOX is limited to their own specific hard drive sizes)
Vidzone (music videos) is free on PS3
Plus an advantage Sony has over Microsoft is their customer support is answered straight away by a human being in either ireland, england or america and you are not routed to India after having spent forever and a day dealing with the automated system Microsoft use.
Don't get me wrong I am not a fan-girl I have a 360 and a Wii and I appreciate the differences in all 3 consoles. This post is purely to point out to the OP why the PS3 is more expensive than the other 2.
If he can afford the PS3 then it is a good console to buy if not he may have to go for the 360. If he ends up wanting to get a 2nd hand PS3 I would recommend getting one from a 'real' shop as opposed to online because at least with the likes of Game/Gamestation they will give a warranty with it.
Hope this helps

You might be able to get a pre-owned 60gb PS3 Console in-store at Blockbuster's.
Check a few as some Blockbuster stores aren't actually selling these.
Didn't Blockbuster US go bust or something? Make sure you buy this with a credit card (Section 75 Consumer Protection) if you manage to get one.
You might be able to pick one up for £149.99.0 -
Will you be letting him play on-line? If so, then my advice is to go with what his friends have, assuming they play on-line too. If he's the only one playing one particular game on the Xbox and all his friends are on-line with the PS3 (or vice versa) you'll soon hear from him that he's got the wrong console.Dave. :wave:0

In high street stores PS3s are a lot of money, especially if you're looking at the new 320 GB.
I purchased a deal on play.com (which I seriously recommend) where I saved a lot of money, I got 3 games (all new and worth about 30-40 pounds each) and the new 320 GB PS3 all for about 300 pound, so in a high street shop I would have spend 300 and something just on the console. I recommend you look at play.com because you can purchase the PS3 with 120 GB which is still good, and I know one package comes with a couple of games and toy story 3 blue ray (which you can play on a ps3) so you could really save yourself money.
And about knowing what all the fuss is about, I'm the same as you! I don't understand why it's any better than an XBOX. My boyfriend wants a PS3 and he's already got an XBOX. Males and their games, eh?
Good luck buying the PS3. I know that when I compared prices just last week I saved about 40 pounds with play.com then with various other websites which the prices were all the same on. Good luck and make sure you compare prices first... Or just use play.com

I agree with the fact that buying on the internet is best these days, this is typical nowadays. However, I wouldn't go straight to a website for a deal, it would be better to shop around if you can. And the deals posted on here will be fairly good too; I can vouch for that as most of the posters are usually very reliable [although that can't always be guaranteed].
That said, I'm not criticizing Hollie Rose, her purchase sounds excellent [if it suites you].
And especially take note of Phantom Flan Flinger's and Jaxb's advice as they appear to be more in the know with regards to consoles, they appear to be gamers, I'm not, I'm just a spotter of deals.0 -
it might be worth checking out what his friends have, if they all have xbox's then get one as well so they can all play online togethor, likewise the PS30
