Help Needed re Student Bank Account/Loan/Overdraft

Hi, I'm a recent ex-student who banked with the uk bank, NatWest. They gave e a student account with overdraft. But within months of arranging this, they informed me they had no proof that I was a student, despite me providing the requisite proof when I set up the account and my branch being a 5 min walk from my college/university. I have gone in repeatedly to various branches since thne, with student ID to get this sorted, but to no avail. Now, they want to take me to court over it!
I ought not to have charges on my account and I also ought to have a year to pay off any legitimate debts, interest free.
My mother thinks I should pay the full amount (including about £1000 bank charges) in small amounts, but I have half a mind to fight them in court, since this was their fault and it severely inconvenienced me during my time studying to go in repeatedly to attempt to correct their mistakes.
But if I take the court option and lose, I'll have to pay court cost in addition to this already staggering amount.
Does anybody on here have any advice?
Much appreciated.

To be honest I think you'd be better posting this on the "Claim back unfair bank charges" forum where there are experts who can help you. Whether you were a student or not, they can't legally charge you - and if you follow all the good advice on that board and the consumer action group site it directs you to, you should get back all your charges reasonably soon. Well done for standing up to the bank! (Sorry I can't help more but my home is more often the "Old Style" forum!)
