I think you need to seriously consider you lifestyle and what you consider to be treats. Was you home affordable before if so why isn't it now and that type of thing. There is a huge difference between struggling to pay the bills and just not being able to afford the 2 holidays abroad a year and the new car every 3 years type lifestyle.

For me I would not sell my home and move further away unless it was a case of dire financial pressures.
Things to consider: Commute to work? I guess further out means longer commute, what impact will that have on travel costs/time spent with family?
Schools?? better or worse in area further out?
general people, I knw it sounds cliche but if the area you are looking at moving too is a bit 'rough' what impact will that have on your kids/insurances/quality of life?
Would the move be permenant or wold you be looking at returning to tree lined suburbia in the future?

You have also said you have 2 kids yu work part time, depending on their ages could you be looking to increase your hours soon which would free up more spends. Its all a balance but for me I consider my home to be more important to my quality of life then a holiday so I look to keep the best home I can.
