The WI Cookbook

I was at a food festival in Belfast a month or so ago and the Women's Institute had a stand. I've been looking for a decent book with recipies for jams and preserves so I had a quick look through it and found it had a whole section. It's one of those books that the WI have compiled after asking for recipies from their members,

It was only £7 so I bought it. I have to say it's become my bible. It's really old fashioned, some of the recipie ideas are a bit dodgy in the sandwich section but if you see one pick it up, it's absolutely full of practical recipie ideas and far better value than any other cookbook I've ever owned.
My Doctor told me that "1 out of 3 people who start smoking will eventually die." The other two apparently became immortal.

  • I was around at my mums last week and told her that I was having trouble finding a good gingerbread recipe. She went and got 2 WI books for me to look at. They were published in the late 60's. She was wanting a more recent copy so that got me looking on the internet. The WI have a web site and you can order the books off it. Or alternately Amazon or Ebay x :j
  • my mum has loads of these books and some of my favourite childhood food memories are things from the WI cookbooks. And there is nothing, and I mean nothing, that the WI don't know about tray-bakes !!

I don't think you'll find them for sale in bookshops, this particular one had a home made feel about it. I don't think it even has an isbn. Your best bet is either the WI website or any festivities that have a WI stall.

  • forgot to mention- first printed in 1980.

  • We inherited "Gleanings from Gloucestershire Housewives" from my Mother. It was published by the Gloucestershire Federation of Women's Institutes, probably in the 1950's (there is no date).

We still use it regularly today.
