  • I am sure, but you do not know what retirement will be like until you do it. Maybe you satisfy your needs in other ways, without the restrictions a dog brings.

Plenty of time (hopefully) to get one later, when you see how it is.

I like the 'Hey there is a £20 flight to somewhere, going in a couple of days time. Lets go!' approach, myself.

And others choose different things from you.
I am sure they have put some thought into their decision.

Sounds a good approach to me; however it's also good that others are happy to stay home with a dog or whatever - otherwise there would be a desperate shortage of £20 air fares !
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

My biggest mistake was a whopper - an Alfa Romeo - £22k new, sold 2 years later with 35k miles on the clock for £7.5k....

What model was this? That's unbelievable. If a Stelvio loses that much percentage-wise I would definitely get a 2 year old model!

My OH would love a dog in retirement, and so would I,.... in theory, but, like you, I want the flexibility to just get up and go (we don't have the tie of grandchildren yet) and a dog would make that impossible.

Thankfully, (or not!) one of our sons is terrified of dogs due to to a childhood trauma so the dog dream will probably remain just that for my OH.

You seem to have the outlook of everybody is judging everybody else on their car choice,
We live in an age of 'look at me, me, me'. It has been my experience that you need to be at least 50 before most no longer care whether they are judged on their choice of car/home/spouse/whatever. Even so, the feeling remains that we are being judged. Appearances are important (to some) and misleading (for most).

For the record, I have a relative who drives an Aston Martin. You can arrive at his home in darkness and there will be a spotlight illuminating the car. No such courtesy is extended to guests trying to find the door. He is in his early 50s so I guess he still has loads to prove to himself.

The wealthiest person I have ever known kept a hanger-sized garage full of mega-expensive motors. The vehicle he drove daily was a battered. old mini. Now that's someone who has zero to prove to others. I suspect that michaels is in the same category.

MiTo Cloverleaf. Lovely car, and I'd have another Alfa in a heartbeat, but that was painful.

To each his own and all that, but seems odd (to me) to finally get almost unlimited freedom, but then immediately restrict that freedom with a dog.

There's no end to the ways dogs are nicer than bosses.
Free the dunston one next time too.

I have one of them as my second car. Paid £6k for it last year when it was 6 years old. It's my boy toy.

170 bhp in a small car, it doesn't half shift. Loads of extras (worth £7k new, allegedly) including Xenon headllghts, headlight washers, sat nav and parking sensors.

    Absolutely love it.

    You obviously have taste.

Not sure I would have paid its new price of nearly £25k though.

Keeping it until it dies. Or I do. :o

    (Hence my Stelvio comment)

Interesting observations have been made how men and women handle themselves in retirement.

I am a man and have been retired for over twenty years.

On a Monday morning I participate in a Nordic Walking group organised by the commune.
Average attendance 35 retirees of which 6 are men!

On a Friday morning I participate in a Aqua Gym lesson organised by the commune.
Average attendance 50 retirees (its a very large basin) of which 4 are men!
There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.

That's really interesting. From my own experience I think generally men are much less social and unless they have a hobby which facilitates some social interaction very few of us actually make time for friends.
