College Fees

Hi, Im currently on an Access to Higher Ed Course (level 3), Im hoping someone can help a fellow student of mine.
She gave up work to do the Access course knowing that she would not be able to claim any benefits (currently seeking part time employment) but she thought she would get her course fees paid for her. Since enrolling she has found out that as she has 4 AS level qualifications she has to pay the fees. She has managed to pay the first installment but the next one is looming, shes applied to charities for help but none is available. Does anyone know of any other way she may get help??

Thanks x

    How old is your friend?

    According to direct.gov.uk:
If you don’t already have GCSEs, A levels or equivalent qualifications, you may be able to study for them without having to pay any tuition fees. You’ll be able to get free tuition:

    • for a course which leads to your first full Level 2 qualification
    • if you’re under 25, for a course which leads to your first full Level 3 qualification

Sticking my neck out here as aged brain doesn't retain as much cos the archives are just full to bursting but ................

If my memory serves me correctly then for the level 3 entitlement purposes 4 AS passes count as a full level 3 and 2 A2's also count.

The criteria is very strict and narrow.

I will report back this evening when I have checked the information.

Can I just say though. Your friend must have known she had fees to pay before she decided to take the course *confused*

Hi Mags - 4 AS levels used not to be a full level 3 qualification although I gather there have been some changes. I'll check it out as well so we can both help the OP.

Checked as soon as I got into work - yep - for Level3 entitlement 4 AS's count as a full level 3

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

I sent an email to the ALG people and they said the same thing, so I've altered my posts above.

What a shame and definitely a change for the worst.

Things are moving all directions at the moment - cuts here and cuts there - L2 and L3 entitlement will be going but not sure what will be in place of it. Talking about loans

Big meeting in the college yesterday with surrounding Principals - no information come out of it though - might here more next week.

Just wait for when they cut EMA:eek:
