banks holding mortgage payments for 7 days????

i don't know if anyone has come accross this, but my mother in laws payment date is the 30th of the month and she always pays it on the 26th of every month, the last three times she has had letters sent to her on either the 31st or 1st of the next month saying she is in arrears with her mortgage, when she has rang barclays they say its because they hold the money for 7 days. she pays this in as cash so surely this can't be right and they say there is no way she can pay direct to the mortgage dept so its always going to look like she has been in arrears. anyone got any ideas as to what she can do besides paying it earlier which isn't really a option as she can only pay it when she gets paid

Manual payments take longer to process as it takes up to 3 days in clearing cycle and when they get to the other end they have to manually check the reference number and than apply it to the mortgage. That can add a few more days to it. Plus, throw in a weekend or bank holiday and you easily have up to 7 days. Direct debit is the best way.
