legal age when a teenager can get a job

Hi
What is the legal age a teenager can get a Saturday job? My daughter really wants one and few of her friends have some but we not sure of the legal age? Can anyone please help?
Things will get better day by day.

  • Depends on the Employer and their Insurance, I had my first job at 12 working for rides at the local stables but they have had to increase the age to 14 now due to Insurance.

    According to direct.gov.uk:
Are you old enough to have a job?

If you're under 13, you cannot legally be employed, although you can take part in paid sport or entertainment with permission from your local authority. Once you reach the age of 13, you may be allowed to be employed to do 'light work'. This is work which is not likely to affect your health, safety or education. Things you can do may include shop work or taking on a paper round.

There are a variety of rules about where you can work and working conditions depending on your age. For the basics see direct.gov.uk Employment Rights for Young People

Irrelevant to the thread but I hear these days that with stables and horses youngsters actually pay to work there instead of the other way around!!

There are also byelaws on the employment of children in some authorities, check with your local council.
