Is it just me or is supermarket "fresh" veg a massive rip-off?

I find Morrisons to be the best of the main supermarkets.
I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.

  • Yes supermarket fruit and veg is a major rip-off. Local greengrocer or box scheme is much better value and (usually) fresher and better quality.

Here is a price comparison of one of our local organic fruit and veg box schemes prices compared with the same items at Tesco:

East Coast Organics £12.00 delivered (free delivery)

Tesco organic range: £18.16 delivered (£5 delivery charge)

Tesco non-organic inc value range £17.32 (£5 delivery charge)

Even if you exclude the delivery charge, the local box scheme organic fruit and veg at £12.00 is fractionally cheaper than Tescos standard (non-organic range) at £12.32 and fresher + higher quality + you are supporting a local farm and small local business rather than a giant corporation.

  • I have decided recently not to bother buying ANY fruit and veg from supermarkets - It is a complete rip off and taste 'plasticy' with no real flavour!

I am going to go back to my habit from years back of going down the markets ( especially good at closing time! )

Or at least pop down to the local guy down the road who does the plastic bowls overfilled with veg and fruit for £1 ... And you can 'examine' them first if have any worries..

I get my Tesco shopping via home delivery and it seems they just send me the cr*p! lol
  • Supermarkets do rip you off! Never add fresh fruit/veg of tesco order.

I shop at local greengrocers (not great) or Lidl if I can be bothered to walk up a hill!!
  • We've stopped buying from supermarkets as the quality was sometimes quite poor. The worst offender was Morrisons. We now buy from our local farm shop and have found the price to be a lot cheaper and the product fresher

*AND* when you get them home, they aren't actually that fresh! They look ragged and beat up

So check the veg before you buy it, job done.
