Simple fact is that it is an employers market and you are clearly not meeting their criteria for interviews. You should ask for feedback but complain? No point at all.
  • thanks for taking the time to laugh at my situation. im glad it gave you a big laugh.

thank you to the one helpful comment, i know i sound daft but the word soul destroying doesnt even come close, especially when you are unemployed and clsoe to losing your home cos you cant afford the rent.

jesus, just when i think its safe to come on this board and ask for advice, it reminds me why this used to a nice place to come to, but is no longer.

Would you prefer it if people said 'yes, complain away' - which could lead you to getting a bad name and all schools automatically throwing your application straight in the bin or the cries of 'oh no, not her again'.

Just because advice isn't what you want to hear, doesn't make it unhelpful or bad....
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
  • Well, I think some of you are pretty horrible and enjoy being nasty to people who ask for advice - not just on this occasion but others.

Stella - good luck in your job hunt. I don't think complaining will get you anywhere but as already mentioned, a request for more specific feedback might. I think it is still the case that jobs are oversubscribed.

Rather than making a complaint which will go nowhere (apart from possibly getting your name known for all the wrong reasons!) you should make sure that your applications really are 'hitting the spot'.

It's no use saying "I have the right experience" or "I've done this exact same job before": you have to demonstrate WHAT your experience is and how it matches what they are asking for.

But that was my point - maybe I just wasnt being clear. I am one of those candidates that has an abundance of experience and qualifications that is going for a job that in any other world would be seen as 'beneath them' just so I have got a job full stop. Thats why im getting so frustrated. I have years and years of admin experience in schools and children's centres but I seem to be ignore because, well I just dont know. I know there are lots more people looking for jobs nowadays and you have to really try and stand out. Thats why I take a day to fill in each application, a day to do the supporting statement, check it and double check it, check my spelling, my grammar, everything.

I just think that people on these forums need to think a little before replying their acidic replies that they think are so funny, witty and clever. You dont know anything about the OP and what they are going through, all you see if a chance to belittle. I just dont get it. Ive seen it so many times recently, and not just for me, but others.

Just report the ppl who slate you on here. Life is too short to feel annoyed by it.

    Highly unlikely.

It's simple. Too many people chasing few jobs.

Yes there are. So I would assume that they have toughened their criteria for shortlisting and the OP is not meeting it in some way. How else would they decide who they are and are not going to interview?

The first x number of job applications received that meet the criteria might be the only ones shortlisted.

After all if you receive 100 applicants and just 50 meet the experience/skills criteria you're still not going to interview all 50 people - its just not practical. At least when companies shortlist in order of return its relatively fair, unlike when hiring managers shortlist x number from a randomly sorted applicant list.
  • Within the public sector posts need to be advertised. It is the case in almost 80-90% of the time that they already know someone internally who is going to take the position. It's just a case of going through the motions.

With all job advertisements though, and with the lack of positions around, it is likely that there were other applicants who were more experienced than you or perhaps they just know exactly what they are looking for and didn't fit what they were looking for.

I wish you luck in the future

I sympathise with you as I am in the same position. I know my applications are written well as in the past I've got interviews and jobs easily but now it's much harder to get noticed. They can ask for far more exact requirements than they used to and there will always be tens of people out there with just that experience and even if you have the experience, if it isn't recent enough it gets ignored. When you ask for feedback also, they don't give it. They either just ignore the request or give general feedback that isn't useful.

All we can do is keep on going until our experience is just what they are looking for.
