Scared - Court tomorrow

We are finally going to court tomorrow to file for BR. It's been a long time now as I got CAB advice back in May and joined this forum at the same time where the people have been amazing! I have not been scared about going to court but I suddenly, today, feel very nervous. I keep reading posts on here from people that are very depressed and can't cope and say that BR is worse than before they were BR. Please can you reassure me that it's all going to be ok? From my point of view I can't wait to go BR as it will stop the hassle I am getting from creditors, it means a fresh start whereby I can put things right and start from scratch. It means no more sleepness nights because I am trying to find the money each month to pay my debts, etc etc. I know BR is a HUGE deal and it's not to be taken lightly but surely it's gotta be better than the place we're in now - it means there's light at the end of the tunnel? Am I being naive and have I got it all wrong? I keep wondering if it's the right thing to do and having second thoughts :-(

Maybe I'm getting twitchy because tomorrow is looming and there's no turning back?!

Good luck for tomorrow, although you will not need it :) Whilst it has been a rollercoaster ride for me it was the best thing I could have done. You will have your ups and downs, but it has got to be better than where you are now. As long as you know what you are letting yourself in for, you will be fine, and there is always this great forum and its peeps to help and advise you :)

Good luck tomorrow. I went BR last month and so far little has changed other than that I can get my creditors off my back when they call.

I found going to court a bit of an anticlimax and I know others have said the same. I think it was because I was so hyped up about it that when I didn't even have to see the judge I was like "is this it?"

I felt numb for a couple of days afterwards and then started to feel better.

I have my phone interview with the OR tomorrow so will be glad when that is out of the way.

Stay strong and you will come out of this the other side. :)
  • Hi don't be scared about the court, I was scared witless but everyone was fine, I did have to see the judge {not everyone does} and my heart sank when they said {we'll take you down!!!!!! to see him} but the 'down' was on the ground floor, my imagination was running wild by this point!!!!!! Judge was really nice, sympathetic even, and then waited for OR to ring. This was a day later and I had to keep going from room to room {as kids were at home} in the end I locked myself in the loo with all the paperwork!! OR was very understanding.......

I am nearly four months in now......although I have to say it has made no difference to my financial situation .......{but why that is, is a, verrrrrrryyyyyy.....long story. Just to say good luck, but you won't need it and as from tomorrow onwards and upwards........:)
Deep doubts, deep wisdom, small doubts, little wisdom..............
  • theres nothing to worry about regarding court tomorrow - honestly!
its like any office appointment, ours was all done by the clerk of the court, didn't see the judge, just had a bit of hanging around while the papers were processed and stamped.

I was very nervous about our OR interview, but I really needn't have been, my OR has been great, explained everything, didn't pry more than he had to, and has been helpful with any questions I had.

I went BR mid-September, my phone ringer has been switched back up from silent for about 3 weeks now, and its bliss - very few calls regarding our debts pre-BR. I have an IPA, but even so, its far less than I was struggling to find for minimum debt repayments for the 9 months or so before going to court.

Good luck, you will be fine, really. I know BR was the right option for us.

Hello beard co2 please don't worry about it all as the last post all say, i have just got back from court this morning and went through what you are going through. I had problems sleeping and didn't want to get up to go. Once there it all went through with no hassles as yet and it feels weird as if nothing has changed. ( just that i am free from those callers). I was even summoned to see the judge who did there usual speal looking down at me but was really nice once she got her script out of the way and gave me lots of freindly advice. Good luck .
  • Hi Beard :)

I know how terrifying the sound of courts are to most people, but believe me it is not as bad as we think it is going to be. I went B/R in Nov 2008 (Disharged Nov 2009!!) and I was a nervous wreck before I went into the courts. It is very simple and the court clerks etc are very very nice and sympathetic and helpful. I had my papers checked and waited to see the judge, I was so scared, but the judge was very nice, asked me a few questions and stamped my paperwork and said I declare you bankrupt!! All in all about 4 minutes....I remember leaving the court and thinking "eh? Is that it?" I was numb for a few days as we can all testify the lead up to B/R is an emotional roller coaster. But the weight of financial problems were lifted within a couple of days and I actually slept better in the first week!
I was wondering why I hadn't done it sooner instead of all the ill health, worry and sleepless nights beforehand, and you may feel the same way - a lot on here have said the same thing.
Good luck, you will be ok. I AM GLAD I WENT B/R - over 12 months now and life is peachy :)

You've already been through the difficult part.. Getting there. Everything else is a breeze, I was discharged on 20-10-2010, now my life is back on track, I dont owe the banks a penny, just about to start a new job after a year of funemployment and life is a gaziilion times better. Good luck and dont worry! You aren't alone, me, you and lots of other people have been through what you are about to and really, it isnt all that bad. OK so getting credit is going to be difficult from here on in but that aint such a bad thing, I had forgotton what it was like to live on what I earned, now I can do that again and i need to save for a new telly instead of buy now pay later.. And thats a good thing cos many, many people get that part all wrong, like I did. Ignore the knoobheads that tell you to learn from it, thats like telling a kid that has been run over to look both ways in future, of course he will!

Chill, it's all good from now on in.

    Make sure you have everything!

Try to look forward to it. Tomorrow is going to be a new dawn; not a namby thing people refer to when they want to sound all new-age, but for you it really will be the start of something new. Tomorrow you will be debt free. Tomorrow you will be able to breathe again. Tomorrow those shoulders will be held up high rather than weighted down.

    Tomorrow really will be AOK.
