Garden Bonfires

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but couldn't find anywhere else.
Please move if needed.
I have just gone out in my garden to hang out my washing, just got to the end of hanging it all out. Lo and behold my neighbour is having a garden bonfire.
I'm sure I've heard somewhere that bonfires weren't allowed until after a certain time, am I right or am I making it up?
If so who do I complain to? It isn't the first time this has happened, and it really stinks.
Have now brought all washing in, and shut all windows.

    Hello jacand

You do have my sympathies! That is so inconsiderate of your neighbours. I used to have neighbours who were just as bad, every weekend there was a bonfire, even in the height of summer, so I'd be inside with the windows firmly shut and washing on airers.

Anyway - the rules about bonfires are contained in council bye-laws. Your council's website may have something about it, otherwise a call to your council's offices should help you establish what is and isn't allowed regards bonfires.

PS: My neighbours moved...yey!! Then a load of S.Africans moved in and they were ten times worse with smelly barbeques and a stereo blasting in the garden every weekend. So I moved lol.

    Hi jacand,

I did a quick google and found these links. Have a look here for bonfire code of practice.

As snowy says there are some really inconsiderate people around. We don't light bonfires, but we do love barbeques.....it doesn't take much to knock on our next door neighbours door to let her know when we are planning to light the barbeque.

it all depends where you live. In my authority theres a code of practice but basically it means that if a person wants to have a bonfire they can and there is not a lot you can do. However, if a person has a 'lot' of bonfires (say 1 a week or more) there is action your authority can take. Sadly depending onhow your houses lay it could be that different neighbours have one on different days!

I bet there will be much more of this happening when they start charging by weight to take our rubbish away :(.

Perhaps we should all lobby our local councillors to bring in enforceable regulations. If they can legislate for noise polution, surely they can do something about air polution.
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

Hi, I was at a meeting about this recently and by law you can have a fire at any time of the day, or night, but you should only burn garden waste (organic matter) you are not allowed to burn anything else.

If is is a real problem get in touch with environmental health as it could be a statutory nuisance, but is only illegal if something other than garden waste is being burned.

Thanks to all of you that replied.
They do have regular fires and I know it is them cause I can see them from my upstairs window. (sad I know)
Anyway I think next time I might say something to them, a lot of the websites I've looked at seem to suggest having a word with them first. Then take it further.
I'll let you know what happens
    Thanks again.
