Mortgage application - joint account with ex

I have a joint account with my ex that I am in the process of being removed from. I will also be applying for a mortgage soon. Should I send a letter to the credit checking agencies (how many are there) notifying them I no longer use this account? Or will they already be aware of this fact?
If I need to send a letter, does anyone know if a template is available online?
Also, I have a credit card, but never use it (originally got it to stooze). Should I close the account?
