Any recommendations for a wind up/solar powered radio?

Saw these on Ebay and wondered if they were any good? What sort of price should I pay if I do decide to get one?

Thanks.

    Hi kittykat,

You might get more help with this on the Green and Ethical board, so I'll move your thread over there.

  • I got a windup radio for Xmas that was from M & S - bit of a bind when your working and realise that the sound went about 5 mins ago !

I think it was about £25 and got good use out of it.

  • Whats the sound and reception like on a wind up radio?
  • I have a Freeplay Ranger wind-up radio and find the reception both inside the house and when away camping (occasionally in the middle of nowhere) is pretty good.

Having said that, it is sometimes necessary to fiddle around with the tuner and aerial for a minute or so to get it tuned in properly.

The sound quality is acceptable to my ears, but those more used to better quality sound systems may disagree.

I think these Freeplay radios are available for around £30. I don't use the radio for long periods, so I find I seldom have to use the wind-up facility provided as the solar panel keeps the battery topped up - or at least it has done during the brighter days of summer.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks Fife Player. I've been hankering for a wind-up radio for awhile now as I listen to the radio alot. I might invest in one.

Or use rechargeable batteries and a solar powered charger?

The ones form Maplins are 9.99 plus VAT, cheaper than a wind up radio if you already own a radio and rechargeable batteries.

Boots have got one for £15.

It's part of the 3 for 2 range and you can spend your boots points on it as well.
  • This one is a mobile phone charger and torch aswell !
If you didnt watch tv you could have all your communication and entertainment needs fulllfilled by one little gadget and never use an ounce of electricity :) ( I know electricity doesnt come in ounces) You could even read a book by the torch!

  • currently robert dyas has them for £7.99, includes a torch. no idea if they're any good at this price. (they also have an offer on wind-up torches, 2 for 7.99, but they're not that brilliant). i've got a freeplay one, cost £50 in john lewis (cos it's 4-band not 2-band), and its lovely.
