How do you use Apples if you don't like them

We have 5 apple trees in the garden, 3 of them are cooking apples. I have never used them in the 15 years I've lived here but since joining this forum think that I should. How can I use the apples and make them tasty for someone who doesn't like cooked apple but loves cider. Looking for something quick and easy please.

Buy him 10 bottles of Magners and once he's p*ssed, he'll eat an apple crumble at one sitting.

Pork chops cooked in the slow cooker with apples and cider are nice. Put some carrots, onion, celery & garlic in too, and serve with a big heap of mash and a large glass of cold cider!

And if you really don't like them why don't you offer them for sale at your garden gate?

  • Its me who doesn't like them. We have always given them away so it might be a little difficult to charge for them now unless I set up a stall at the end of the drive. Cooked some with cinnamon and mixed spice this lunchtime and they were not too bad.

The obvious answer would be ... make your own cider ;)

how about making your own Apple Cider Vinegar and then utilising it for old fashioned "remedies"

    Yep, that's what I meant ;)
My in laws do this when they have a fruit or tomato glut. They give their proceeds to the Breast Cancer unit at the local hospital, as MIL is a BC Survivor, but I'm sure DFWs could pocket the proceeds with a clear conscience!

You could share them with your friends and neighbours. My next door neighbour gives us a bag of plums from her tree every summer. Its a lovley gesture.

What about making apple jelly.....see thriftlady's post here.

It's inspired me to make loads of different jellies. I now have blackberry, apple and blackberry, apple and rosehip, rowan and apple on it's own. The apple jelly doesn't taste too much like apple.....just a sharp/sweet taste and is not only lovely on toast and scones but can be used in sauces and gravys. They also make lovely gifts for friends if you buy a bit of gingham and dress the jars up a bit.

Following on from what Pink said, you can use apples as a base for herb jellies. I make mint jelly, rosemary jelly, sage jelly.

    Delicious on roasties and yorkies.
