That's not what the poster intimated! The poster did GCSEs and A-levels, and was offered a job. Whilst it may have been a key reason, it was probably not the only reason s/he got the job. You have to be able to pass interviews, have the right attitude, the right experience (in some roles).

One doesn't necessarily lead to the other. The poster clearly had a great experience in re-taking GCSEs which is fab, but s/he didn't say that GCSEs alone led to the job offer! :)KiKi

The qualifications certainly opened the door for me. Without the GCSEs on my CV, I doubt I would have been considered for interview!

However, before marrying and having children had worked in office jobs, therefore did have a certain level of experience which was useful in the job I was applying for.

But once children came along, part-time jobs such as cake packing in the evenings and a few years collecting eggs for the local hatchery, helped to pay the bills.
  • If you are considering going to uni, you don't have to go back to square one with GCSEs and A levels. As an adult you can do a one year Access course (and these normally include English/Maths GCSE if you are lacking them) and then go straight on to uni.
Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.

Oh right well I think thats what i'd need to do then, and can all these be done part time? And do I just contact my local uni? Sorry for all the questions but I really don't have a clue about all this

Pay attention to post #9. Whilst most public sector areas now have a recruitment freeze etc, this will end some time in the future. Use this time wisely, upgrade you qualifications, get the O-levels in Maths & English, by all means consider the OU.

if its maths and english you want to raise your grades in, then there are free courses that can give you a qualification equal to a GCSE A*-C grade

    https://www.move-on.org.uk

the tests are multiple choice, and are all done online, and you only have to attend a class for your initial consultation to work out what level you are at, and then again for the final assessment. all study can be done at home, in your free time

there is a fast track course which means you can get your grade within 5wks, but most people usually sign up for the full course, which is 32wks

either your local college or the OU but you would have to check, yes i would have thought you could do them part time
  • What sort of Diploma did you do with the OU, and how long ago? You might be able to use it as credit towards a Degree, either with the OU or with a Credit Transfer agreement with your local Uni.
