Sawdust shouldn't really be used for small animals bedding anyway because the phenols can be harmful to their respiratory systems. Carboard chippings/shreddings are much better and cheaper - I pay £2 for a huge bale and it lasts me months. It's basically what they use for horse bedding and you can get a huge bale of cardboard chippings from any 'horse supplies' shop (...sorry, not sure what they're called?).

Can cause liver problems too. Li'l_p you aren't a fancy-rats member by any chance are you?

  • I'd second the bale of shredded cardboard. I think we paid around £4 for our bale, but it lasts for ages for the rats and guineapigs.

As for keeping themselves warm, they will snuggle together for warm if they need it, and that's probably enough if they are indoors on hay. If they are outside in a hutch and trampled down the hay you put in for warmth which they really need then try what I used to do - Get a small cardboard box big enough for the guineas but not much more, put it in the bed compartment. pack your hay between the box and hutch and some inside, top it up each evening to replace what they've eaten. This sort of makes sure that they are well insulated, and their body heat has to warm up a smaller space. That combined with a blanket over the mesh area from evening to morning made sure that my piggies were cosy to the touch, even when their was snow on the roof of their hutch. However, I do now keep them indoors as I like their company and can't be doing with braving the cold so much myself, even though they managed fine.
