Death in service benefits / two years pay etc are, in effect, insurances that are "perks" of his job.
From an employment point of view, if he remains employed but on zero pay, he is still accruing holiday so has to be paid for 28 days per year.0 -
Death benefit can be worth upto two years salary. So it sounds like it is worth his while remaining on the company books for whatever time he has left.
Is there a Maggie centre nearby? They would help with all the benefit paperwork and as he is terminally ill (very sorry to read this) this should be fast tracked.

What a very sad situation.
He needs to speak to HR or his boss from when he was at work and explain the situation. I honestly don't think there are many employment contracts around which entitle the employee to medical retirement - this is usually an agreement and not an entitlement if you see what I mean? I am sure that when they know the reality of the situation they will do everything they can to help.
Death in service for what it's worth where I work if you are not in the pension scheme it's a set sum of under £10k. If you are in the pension it's 3x your annual salary in cash and for some long serving employees it is 4x salary. He needs to at least ensure that his expression of wishes form is up to date so the money goes to who he wants it to go to, or divided accordingly.
I hope this all goes okay, I am sure that if he gets in contact with work his situation will be dealt with in a suitably professional and sympathetic way.0 -
His union need to be reminded of their obligation to help this person, in his situation why should he be making sure the company are acting appropriately, that's the union rep's job - and what he has been paying his membership fee for. Give them a swift kick up the ............
Can his local CAB point him in the right direction.Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.0
