Lots of people on here bought online, and can recommend good websites.
Personally, my lovely man bought me a £29.99 argos ring to propose with an then we went together to a jewellers and tried on, got finger measured etc, which helped us to choose. When we left the jewellers I knew I wanted a 3rd of a carat princess cut on a white band of some sort, in a size o.
We then went online, and mine came from serendipitydiamonds (It was THIS one) We were able to choose a good colour and not worry so much about the clarity as it is a relatively small diamond so inperfections are invisible to the naked eye anyway. It came to about £400 ish.
I LOVE it. It took about 3-4 weeks to arrive (a little longer than expected) but it was WELL worth it!!!First date 10.2.2002

Can't give you much specific advice I'm afraid, as I was the proposee not the proposer and didn't get to choose the ring, but does it have to be a diamond? Mine is a white sapphire and is stunning!! My H2B was also on a bit of a budget and decided to go for a different stone rather than a diamond just because it's 'the done thing'.
Good luck, and congratulations in advance!

I have a silver and diamond ring that my parents bought me for my 18th birthday from a company called Hot Diamonds - it looks like two separate bands which are a bit wavy and then has three tiny diamonds in between the two bands. I don't think it was particularly expensive so would something like that do for now whilst you save?

Does it have to be a big diamond? I've got a stunning tanzanite with smaller diamonds either side. I told him ages before that if i ever got remarried i wouldn't want anything like my first ring, and he remembered. Luckily, he wanted to do something a bit "different" anyway.saving up another deposit as we've lost all our equity.

Do you know the type of ring your partner wants?
If the answer is yes then the internet is a good place to investigate to make your money go further....there is ebay..great if you want a more vintage ring and there are some great bargains to be had..ive no experience of other online sites but would advise you to consider a few things before purchasing especially relating to the size of the ring you will get..lots of these websites produce very highly magnified pictures so the diamonds look much bigger than they really are....and this can lead you into thinking that the diamond you purchase is much larger than it actually is.
Do you know for example how big a .25 carat diamond is?...if not,and its not a problem..pop to a jewellers on the high street and get an idea of the sizes of stones...that way your internet search will be easier if you know what to expect
if you dont have an idea of what your partner wants why not propose with a "trinket ring" ...even a haribo sweet has been used in the past..or something a little more substantial...that way your partner can help choose the ring thats right before you continue a search online...I would recommend that you do visit high street jewellers,if only to see what a ring looks like on the finger...lots of times ive seen people change their minds on a style as it just didnt suit insitu.again it makes the online seach much easier if you know exactly what you want...
