Washing wool

We've tried to soak shrunk woollen things in hair conditioner and then thoroughly rinse. Normally they could be restored.
We use cloth nappies so have a quite a bit of woollen wraps/soakers. We also found woolite is very good for washing - but I do handwash anything wool!0 -
hi, i've got an aran 100% wool jumper, and it says hand wash only on it....this really puts me off wearing it as i HATE hand washing lol!!
could i put it in the washer on its own on a cold wash with no spin, or do you think it would still shrink it?
thanks0 -

Depends how precious it isBy even a light wash in the WM, you run the risk of shrinkage or distortion. If you're happy to take that risk, go ahead, and you may be surprised at how well it works :T

I found that the danger was not of shrinking but of the whole thing going very, very saggy! I ruined a beautiful Aran jumper like that years ago, and though it is not helpful to you, I wouldn't risk it myself.December GC: £3500

If it's something you treasure, then don't risk it. On the other hand, if you NEVER wear it because you don't like hand-washing it, you may as well give it a go in the machine on a wool or silk cycle (cold) with a wool detergent. If it's comes out OK, great, if it spoils, well, as you never wore it, you're not going to miss it much anyway. If I'm over the hill, where was the top?0

we were discussing hand washing in the local chemists a while back...........and the (male) pharmacist overheard us and came out to say that he NEVER washes his Aran jumpers! he just puts them on hangers and ties them to the washing line on a windy day! us ladies just looked at each other and changed the subject. lol0

Wash it on the coolest wash, inside out but inside a pillowcase. The biggest danger is the streching of flinging it arround the washer. Fasten the end of the pillowcase - a large bag klip would probably work - and a couple of towels in with it will help cushioning.
It will be fine i'm sure, I do this all the time, though I do have a large laundry net bag for the job.0 -
Hi mandy_moo,
As your thread hads dropped down the board I've added it to the main thread on washing wool jumpers which has more advice that may help.

I have a fine merino jumper that I handwashed. It smells a bit like wet dog. How can I stop the nasty wet wool smell? What am I doing wrong?0
