Dandruff

Hi :o

I have really long thick hair and a bad case of dandruff. To be honest I have been neglecting it for the last few months as I haven't been very well, and usually only wash it once a week just now and keep it tied up, for a while, I was only brushing it once a week too:o but I am getting slowly but surely back into the land of the living, and after all this neglect I have developed a bad case of dandruff. What do I do? I used Head and Shoulders years ago when I was pregnant and although it was good I felt it wasn't good for the condition of my hair. I dye it so it has a tendency to be dry at the ends with greasy roots (I really should wash every other day).

Any home made ideas or suggestions for relatively inexpensive non pharmaceutical treatments which would be gentl on my hair?

Thanks x

  • Do not use head and shoulders for a start!

I'd suggest using maybe Tgel or something similar and seeing how you get on. Also try giving your hair two really good washes, massaging hard to loosen any flakes. Make sure you rinse well too. And I'd say don't wash every day either, maybe every other day.

The other thing is that for me sugar is a real baddie in terms of causing dandruff. If I'm eating too many refined sugary foods I can guarantee having a bad scalp. Maybe worth thinking about :)
  • Thanks Belfast girl I had forgotten about Tgel I used it when I was a teen, I knew this thread would be worth the red face :) as for diet, you are right, I haven't been eating properly at all, and am living on white bread toast most days, so I need to get that sorted out. XX

My mum suffers from more of a flaky scalp than dandruff, but she uses Ginger shampoo from Bodyshop.

From my own personal experience of too much white bread toast :) with chocolate this is definitely bad for your scalp! Get down the market and buy some good fruit and veg pronto!!

oh and obviously eat it as well, this is the bit that's sometimes hardest :)

The whole family had dandruff earlier this year, can only out it down to Treseme, trial & error with a few months of shampoos then visited the doctor who prescribed Capstal, it smells of cold tar but has done the job.was advised to oil the scalp.hth

i've had this a bit lately too! i have bought some of that oilatum shampoo from home bargains...going to see if that helps mine! head and shoulders didn't seem to do a lot for me..
  • I get dandruff too, though it's more like very dry skin on my scalp. Like others have said worse when I have more sugar in my diet which is one reason I think I get it more in winter - all that hot tea and sugar!

All dandruff shampoos really mess up my long hair, and the dandruff comes back if you don't continually use the shampoo. Two things have worked for me - rinsing my hair with a vinegar rinse - supposedly returns the ph level on your scalp to normal, and using tea tree conditioner from Tesco, slapping in on an leaving my hair wrapped up overnight and rinsing in the morning. Both very cheap and both good for you hair also.
No buying unnecessary toiletries 2014. Epiphany on 4/4/14 - went into shop to buy 2 items, walked out with 17!
