student loan payments check your statements carelfully

Help
Has anyone else had problems with slc not creditsing payments throught the tax system?

I have two lots of student loans, under the two sets of arrangements.
One comes out of my bank account and is showing on my statement correctly, a credit going on every month, and the second lot thats paid at source through the tax system.

HOWEVER - today I received my statement for the second lot (dated septemer 2006 but for the tax year 2004-2005)- ie that collected through the tax system and it shows as me having contributed nothing in that year despite me making payments of £99 per month for at least 6 months.

The complicated part is that part of that year I was a supply teacher- so weekly paid and irregular wages but the rest of the year I was paid by the Local authority, and I do have the P60 that shows that part, but not what was paid by the supply agency.

Effectively while I am confident I can claim back those payment made while I was with the local authority I havent the payslips for the rest I paid ( and all of last years due to a severe flood we had and papers getting destroyed in the process.

I'm gutted that having paid this money out I now have effectively 'lost' that money altogether.

How many more of us are there? I havent thought to check them in the past either and have been paying back since 2001!!!!

Also no-one accepts responsiblilty for this as Ihave found in the past. Its always someone else's fault, eg tax office, slc, or your employer. No-one admits anything.

I now owe over 8,600, due to interest paymetns going on and no credits being added.

this is a lesson for us all about safeguarding those important papers that show we are paying back, cos it feels that everyone is there to make money out us suckers.

  • My girlfriend and I have had similar problems. Statements we both received from them last week both had missing repayments. My girlfriends is outstanding from 2 years ago and we first alerted them of it 1 year ag. Even have a letter from the HMRC confirming that they have sent the money to SLC but still SLC can't provide an accurate statement. Going to lodge an official complaint now and take it to the Idependent Loans Assessor is needs be. Mine is new this year and my heart drops at the thought of having to go through the whole fiasco of sorting it out between HMRC and SLC again.
