Am I Due A Tax Refund?

Options
Hi,

I really dont understand this or if I am, but I am currently a full-time student working part time. I started the job in March of this year and i get paid weekly getting taxed every time around £30!

My tax code is: BR and N.I Catagory is A

I have paid £537 so far in tax and I am currently in my overdraft being charged by the day.

Am I due a tax rebate?

Thank you, Jordan

p.s. I cannot emphasise how much I dont know about this stuff, all help is apprecaited.

As someone under 65 years of age you have a personal tax free allowance of £6475 which means the first £6475/12 = £539.58 per month is tax free and usually equates to a tax code of 647L.

You are on a BR code which means you are not getting the benefit of your tax free allowance. Tax is being deducted at a straight 20%.

You need to contact HMRC and tell them this is your only job and get them to send out the correct code to your employer. Once the employer starts operating the correct code you should get a refund of overpaid tax from April 2010 repaid to you by your employer.

For future reference when you started this job - or any future job where you don't have a P45 - your employer submits a P46. What they put on this form greatly affects the tax you pay, so it's important to take time before answering.

BR means everything at basic rate and should be used when you ticked the box saying "I already have another job". So BR assumes you are receiving your 6,475 of tax-free pay in the first job.
