What does changing a routers's profile mean?

Hello all,

I'm a talktalk customer and am having issues with my broadband disconnecting probably at least once a day. Im using a netgerar dg834g router and decided to try using the d-link router that talktalk sent me, however with that router it disconnects all the time, so I'm going back to the netgear (though I would have thought it should have made no difference)

Talktalk reps talk about changing a routers profile in their members website. What does this mean? Am I right in thinking that increasing or decreasing a profile can case a decrease in download speed but could well lead to more stability on the line?

Thanks to anyone who cares to explain it to me.

Joe
