Underpaid tax...again

  • Yes, my point was that HMRC do argue that if a t/p claims, for instance to have sent in an SA by recorded delivery, even though there may be proof that a recorded delivery letter was received, it does not prove it included an SA return.
Each tax office gets thousands of letters a day and whole teams are employed to open and sort mail as soon as possible and make sure it gets to the officer concerned. Once aupon a time, tax officers had their own allocation of work - probably 3000 PAYE taxpayers - many of whom they would have a good knowledge of and some sort of relationship with. Under the new system, your letter could be dealt with in another tax office if your own office has too much work on hand. When the SA system was introduced and staff expressed concerns about the lack of quality in the way cases would be handled, they were told ' under this system this work could easily be done in India'.
From the cases I have seen on here, at least half the P800's appear to be incorrect, some of them barmily so. I would advise no one to panic - no one is going to be knocking on your door for this money tomorrow - just write and point out the mistakes and let the poor b****** at HMRC sort it out in the fullness of time. I'm sure they are as fed up as we are about this situation.
  • The reason so many P800s appear to be incorrect is almost certainly because someone isn't going to moan on here if everything's fine. I now expect to be proven wrong by a thread that says "HMRC sent me a calculation and all the figures match my income Waaagh". Or by chrismac1, for whom 'data' is the plural of 'anecdote'.

You'd think I was the only person in the UK saying that HMRC are rubbish. But I am not. Clearly the National Audit Office and suchlike are not going to bring out a report headlined "HMRC are rubbish."

But the way HMRC have operated over the past few years has been heavily criticised by the NAO, Accountancy Age magazine, ICAEW, the BBC, UK Business Forums Accounts and Finance posters galore, the wonderfully named website hmrcis!!!!!, Uncle Tom Cobbley and all.....except for a few guys on here who instead take offence when I point out how rubbish it is to taxpayers who are posting for the first time here and may naively beleive that the people they are dealing with by phone and letter have a clue about their tax affairs.

  • You can't really use the number of people holding an opinion as an argument. Lots of people vote Conservative too - it doesn't make them any less stupid for doing so.

In my experience, HMRC do not provide proof of receipt, however if they lose your mail, they generally hold their hands up and if you agree to resend the letter to them, they will assume it was posted to them originally when you said it was. There's no need for recorded delivery etc, as long as you maintain good records on your end and call within an appropriate time frame to ensure your letter has been logged and captured rather than lost or ignored.
  • hi.
I'm in exactly the same position.Underpaid by £2500. hmrc blame xafinity for not requesting tax codes.Sending letter off tomorrow to hmrc . See what happens soon.

Blaming someone else is par for the course. Post up your P45 and P60 details and we'll first make sure they've done their sums right in your case.

But you are the one who tediously posts on here that '50% of the P800 calculations' are in error and repeatedly mentions 'howlers' in them?

    Now :-
"a lot of chrismacs clients seem to have problems". This is true only if 1 client meets your definition of "a lot" as I have 1 client who is owed 1,839 and has been sent a bill for 1,500. None of my other clients are affected
.......... we all know that you only have 2 clients? Or your comments are grossly exaggerated / anecdotal ................ isn't it time to start sticking to the facts?

  • Thanks for all the replies.

Have had a look at the calculation against the P60s I have - tellingly none received from Xafinity Paymaster, and it all looks correct so far.

Praying they take it from Xafinity and not me :( no idea how we'll manage dropping income £225 a month, which will be what it is with repayment and the tax they then start knocking off my pension.

Underpayment 1862 (931 for each year) then another 931 for taxing pension.

    Ugh :(
