in Cutting tax
So I've just started a permanent position and my tax code is 647l Y. Done my research and see this is the basic rate tax code (don't really understand the Y). Only thing is I haven't been working for the full tax year and haven't reached my basic rate so reckon I'm being over takes. I worked a part time job until july but only earnt £200 between april and july. I then worked for a 5 weeks somewhere else earning about 1300. So I've only earnt about 1500 this tax year but am being taxed as if i've earnt 6 months worth of my 19,000 salary?
My monthly gross was 1492 and I've been taxed 302.19.
Is this correct or should I be taxed less?

Something wrong somewhere. The 'Y' indicates you're over 75 and entitled to the increased age personal allowance of £9640???
The tax you have shown is more equivalent to BR ...... which is 20% on all income with no personal allowance (normally for a 2nd job). Either that or you've given a P45 which has created an underpayment in your first month (pretty unusual!)
Don't know where you've got the 647Y from (P2 coding notice - or payslip?) But I'd suggest checking with your payroll people in the first instance. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
when you started the new job did you give them a P45 or did you fill in a P46?
is there a pension deduction .. if so how much0 -
I filled in a p46 as my old employer couldn't send over the p45 until the end of the month. The Y confused me too.0

Are you sure it's not 647L X ? which is how many payroll systems show a week1/Month 1 basis? Is the Tax figure of £302.19 definately just tax or NI as well and if so has it been this every month? If so something is definately a miss, speak to your payroll dept and they may refer you to the Tax office, often if they have gaps in your employment they will put you on Month 10

when you say you were taxed 302.19 do you actually mean tax or do you mean tax plus NI?
if so then it looks like you were taxed as 647L month 10 -
Yeah I was taxed 190 actual and the rest NI. Forgot about that. I get that 647L is the usual tax code but as I haven't been working for the entire tax year then won't this work out as me paying too much and only getting half of my tax free allowance?0

yes you are being overtaxed
do you have P45 from your previous employer?
and did the previous employer have a P45 form the 1st job?0 -
I now have P45 from both previous jobs but no my previous employer did not have the one before that. Should I submit both p45s to the accounts department or if I give them the most recent will the system work itself out. Or do i need to ring the tax office?0

The 'y' should obviously be an 'x'. I Have come across some employers who use 'y' on the basis of the following:
week1 applied ? y/n (yes or no obviously)0 -
Does anyone know how I fix this? Gave my P45 to my employer and nothing's changed.0
