Serum or spray for heat protection?

Hi all, which is the best for fine hair. I am going to dig out my GHDs again. I fancy using the John Freida thermal serum for fine hair but don't want to waste money, would a spray be better?

I actually use both - spray to actually protect the hair against heat damage (I think it coats and protects better, as it's easier to cover hair) and then serum on the mid length and ends for shine, and an extra little bit of protection against split ends.
