I am no expert but I have heard of several people having roots of teeth left in and it was my impression this is not unusual or poor skill on the part of the dentist.

Also the pushing and pulling thing sounds par for the course for an extraction (and something I find very scary but that is because I am a wimp).
  • Hi
Sorry to hijack the thread with another dental qeustion but noticed there was a dentist or two about ;)

I have had a toothache in somewhere between my k9 / eye (?) tooth and the back ones for months. My dentist can't seem to locate the problem. I had one tooth extracted next to my k9 eye tooth and have had 3 lots of antibiotics and a replacement filling in the k9 tooth at the rear. It still keeps hurting!
I think its actually the next one back but after several x-rays he says there is nothing wrong with it. When i bite down hard it definitely makes it worse on that tooth. Sometimes it just comes on for no particular reason and sometimes it comes on when I eat.

I guess the question is what can I do now if the dentist says there is nothing wrong? I am taking Amitryptiline prescribed by the doctor and Ibuprofen as well to kill the pain. Sometimes its fine then it just flares up and lasts for hours or days. At the moment its been constant for a week, and has spread alround my jaw. there is no sign of infection he says.

What should my next course of action be?

    Thanks

    Sorry again for hijacking :o

Can't really say what problem may be without looking at you in person. Your one port of call should be going back to the dentist again. Tooth pain can be very difficult to pin down as you can get referred pain from other teeth etc and sometimes it can take a few "goes" to find the culprit. It may be that you have a cracked tooth which is difficult to see in the mouth, impossible to see on xrays and difficult to diagnose.
  • Thanks Brooke2jack.
I have been this morning and had a root canal job done this morning on the one the tooth that I 'think' is the one. I have got to go back in a fortnight to have it finished. I am praying it's the one that is causing the problem.. The fact that you say that it can take a few goes is in a way comforting as I was beginning to doubt my dentist and was thinking of going elsewhere as I have been in several times for the same thing.

    Cheers
