When should I start looking into a remortgage?

Hi Experts!
My fixed rate runs out on 3rd June 2011 - I remember my last remortgage taking longer than expected (though I dont know how long).
When should I start looking into new rates etc? I'm currently paying 5.79% fixed and hoping to get a good deal this time maybe even trying a variable rate though they scare me a little!
Finally - how would I go about finding a "whole of market" broker?
Thanks in advance.

whats the followon rate thats your stating point.
With a June date I would start looking Jan onwards to narrow down the choices by end of March.0 -
We were offered a new deal (i.e. they'd waive the erc) from Santander 3 months before our deal was due to finish, so I agree that you need to be in a position to know what's out there 3 months before your current deal runs out.0

Thanks to both of you. I am with Santander so I believe their SVR is 4.24%? I'll leave it over Christmas and then start looking around.

Coincidence! So are we.
We were offered a 4 year fix at 4.24% 3 months early.

Excellent deal! Oh I do hope they do something like that with me. Even though I'm not a great Santander fan, I have my zero bank account with them too so if (should I say, when!) I go over my overdraft I dont get any fees. I wouldnt be able to have that account if my mortgage was elsewhere.
