Buy a car for £300 - £400. I've had many cheap cars that have proven reliable.

Join the RAC or similar.

Third party insurance in your name and drive safely to build up NCB.You could have 50% by the time you're 21 when you could hopefully afford a flashier car.

Why not take out the student loan if you haven't already to finance your car thats what I did but had a little extra which I was able to put towards my car.

If you really want to spend £4000 on a car ask your parents to get a loan for you and you can be the second person on the loan ( joint loan ) and repayments can come out your account. This would be the easiest option if your parents are happy for you to spend that amount on your first car.

if you cant keep up the payments on a mobile phone.. how are you expecting to pay for a 4k loan?
