Can university students claim back the tax on maintenance payments made by parents?

Hi!

I am thinking ahead to two year's time when my eldest might well be going of to University.

I can remember that when I was at university in the late 70s that I could claim back the tax on the maintenance payments that my parents made to me (not on the Grant, just their payments).

There was some form of legal wording that my Father wrote down that meant I could claim back the tax, but I can't remember what it was.

Does anyone know what I am on about and can tell me whether this is still possible?

Here's hoping, John

  • You are thinking back to the days of Deeds of Covenant when parents would covenant part of their contributions to their children and if the child was not liable to tax, the child would claim the tax back.
Deeds of Covenant were abolished years and years ago.
  • Thank you both for the information. Never mind eh?

It looks like I'll have to start saving a bit harder over the next two years.

    Cheers, John
