Boss doesnt like me?

I think my boss doesnt like me. Is there a way to change their opinions or is it just a losing battle? Anyone managed to solve this problem and things changed? Thanks.

  • Think you're going to have to give a bit more information here. Why doesnt he/she seem to like you? What's your job? Are you doing anything that would make him or her not keen on you?
  • Your boss doesn't have to like you. Presumably they recruited you so there must have been something........

As above, more info might help.....
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

  • Hello HoneyD,
sounds like you don't enjoy the job much, is there any chance you can find another? Just leave, preferably just before Christmas, as that will cause the most bottom ache for the twit head boss --he-he (i spelt twit wrong, should be an "a" in there somewhere ...).

Option 2 is to defend yourself. I don't mean seek confrontataion with the twit head, just guard against being bullied (which is what he is doing). Life is hard. Often at work we meet bosses who are full of themselves, but are not really up to the job as they have oozed up their little corporate ladder by kissing bottoms and stabbing backs. Its just a fact; the world is is full of rat bags that we just have to deal with.

    1) The boss has no right to make you feel bad at work. He is a bully and completely in the wrong. It is illegal and he is breaking the terms and conditions of employment contract by doing so.

    2) Don't give him any ammunition to use against you. When you are at work, make sure you stick the terms of your contract exactly. Always do everything you are supposed to do and never do anything you are not supposed to do. If you are not sure about anything always ask for help / guidance straight away. Don't cut any corners and always cover your back, for example, If you are going on your break, make a show of looking at your watch, say something like "well, I'm going on my 15 minute break, its quarter past now, I will be back at half past".

    3) Smile at all of your customers and work colleagues all of the time (even when you don't want to).

4)Show an interest in your work / company and ask lots of questions for example "what is the best way to do this...", "do you think customers woud like itb if we did such-and -such..." etc.

    5) Keep a diary of everything twit head does to make you feel bad. Write down everything he has done, with as much detail as possible (date, time place, location, names of any witnesses etc)

    6) Join a Union. Google USDAW. Then get in touch with your rep and explain what has been happening and that if the bullying does not stop you will be asking them to step in and help you.

    7) Keep positive and be happy.

    Thanks for the replies.
The silly thing about this is I actually do enjoy the job! I love the customer interaction and the groups of workers.
The boss seems to find ammunition without me giving it, strangely.
I have been made aware of a department that is desperate for more people so going to see about getting a transfer, though I dont know how to go about it really, will just speak to someone from that department as a starting point.
After my last job (care work) I wanted something where you leave it at the work door when you leave but Im bringing this home with me as its stressful to think my job may be on the line when all Ive done is work my backside off from the get go.

I think you need to do an honest asssessment of both your performance at work and the initial relationship with your boss, and try and work quick to resolve this as you really don't have any security in the probation period.

From your note (and I accept things can be read into it that aren't there) you can see pretty decent reasons why your boss may find the situation hassle:

    - You've been there two months but have already failed to turn up on one day for training.
    - The job is at a supermarket but yet you've complained about handling meat and food. Unless placed on the deli counter then this is presumably a part of the job. If there are strict beliefs as to why it is unsuitable then I can see a manager having to work around this, but quite often by compromising it almost makes it difficult to establish if its a firm issue or just being awkward.
    - Toilet break - your note could clearly be the case but I'd be surprised if someone went out of their way to find someone who had been gone only 5 mins.
    - Complaining of lack of training that other colleagues have received - I don't understand this as your note says that for the last month and a half (out of 2) you've been on training which seems already a lot for the industry you are in.

The last line to me says a lot "Want to add that I am fulfilling my contract by doing the required work and to the standard required." To me that doesn't read an employee trying to deliver their best performance.

As I say I could be wrong, but personally if you like a job I would be busting a gut in the next few months to perform highly over a busy xmas period. Also start engaging with the boss more either through conversation, or just confirming stuff has been done with him (i.e. so he's aware of how hard you are working).

I could be wrong, but personally I think there is enough information so far to suggest it may be a two sided issue rather than just the boss being labelled as the bad guy like Gideon1969 has jumped too.

Try to engage your boss in conversation (when appropriate) ask him if he has any kids, does he like football etc It makes you more of a person to him and less of a "newbie". Try not to stress too much about his behaviour it sounds like allot of shop managers I've worked for, keep your head down, do as you are told and try not to make waves. Believe it or not he probably hasn't given you a second thought.
Oh and didnt they tell you that you could come in contact with meat products in your induction? If they sell it, you will have to handle it, condoms, raw meat, sanitary towels, the lot (lol). If that's a problem, why didn't you mention it earlier? I can kinda see why he is peeved if you are refusing a reasonable request.
