change of job tax code query

I recently changed jobs and at the time i didnt have a P45 because they hadnt sent it yet. So i filled out a p46 instead. Will this effect my tax code? Will i still be on my original tax code which was 647L? or do i need to ask/inform HMRC?

Oh and i received my P45 today but have already given the P46! What should i do?

Thanks for the replies.

  • You need to give your employer the P45 as this gives details of your previous pay and tax. Otehrwise you will be on 647L week 1 basis which may mean paying a bit more tax.

Thanks, I will have to post my P45 to HR with a letter explaining that i have now received it and that i filled out a P46 previously instead. Im sure they can work out the rest hopefully.
