Appointment with Official Receiver

Hi Everyone,
Well I took the plunge and applied to be made bankrupt. This was actioned at the County Court last week and I am now waiting for a telephone interview with the Official Receiver, which is to take place tomorrow. I am rather apprehensive about this and wonder if anyone has been through/knows about the process and could give me some idea of what to expect, please?

Firstly don't worry it should only take about 30min to 45min maybe even less depending on how complicated your financial situation is. The ORs role is to make sure your estate is dealt with fairly between you and your creditors. The role is basically to ensure your creditors get any money/assests s/he deems you can afford (e.g any property or any suyrplus income you could pay in an Income Payment Order). You will have filled in some paperwork and they will go through this to look at your income and expenditure as well as look at what your debts are.
They need to work out if you had done anything improper when taking out the debts, tried to hide any money or give it away. They are usually very nice and as long as you are honest in your anwers and do not give them any concerns that is usually the last you will hear from them until you are discharged.
If you have been trading recently they usually ask you to come to their office so I assume your debts are comsumer ones.
Hope that helps and good luck you will feel so much better now its all over.Moved to Denmark for FIRE by Aug 2025 “May your decisions reflect your hopes not your fears”

Thanks for the response - that has put my mind at rest somewhat but do you know if they are likely to come to my house and look over my stuff? I've been on Benefits for the best part of twenty years - as a single Mum with a child who needed more attention than most and then being long term sick and unable to work - so I don't have much of value as you can imagine! I'm worried that they will want my car (which is worth about £200 max) as I need it to get to the shops, visit my 82 year old Mum, who relies on me and my daughter, who also needs me to be accessible.

Glad to hear it sounds like you have made the right decision. No they will not want to come to your house unless you have very expensive antigues etc. Ref car, don't think it will be a problem if you explain you need it to care for your mother or look for work. Just taking your daugther to school will not wash. Usually they are not interested in such a low value car but just explain why you need it. You will not have to pay an Income PAyment order as you are on benefits so I should think you will be discharged in 6 months if it is all straight forward.Moved to Denmark for FIRE by Aug 2025 “May your decisions reflect your hopes not your fears”
