Take it into any of the Jessops stores in Belfast (don't know if there's one in Glengormley or not) and they can take a look at it for you. They tend to know their stuff too so can usually tell you there and then what's wrong and how much it is to fix it.

However, before you do that, make sure that it's not the fuse in the plug or a loose connection from a frayed wire. Also, if the camera is less than a few years old and it's developed a fault that prevents it from charging, you could argue that the item is not of merchantable quality and take it back to the place you bought it for a free repair or exchange for a new one.

Losing the receipt shouldn't matter. Maybe other MSE users can confirm this but as far as I know it was ruled that a receipt was not needed for breaches of statuatory rights as it was unreasonable to expect people to hold on to a piece of paper no bigger than a sweet wrapper. As long as the retailer still stocks the item it should be exchanged without question, after all they just send it back to their supplier and get a replacement.

Surely you would have to prove you bought it there, and also that it was within its warranty period?

I can't see, for example, Jessops being too excited about the prospect of fixing / exchanging a camera that theoretically may not have been purchased there and might be outside its warranty period?

Like I said before, I'm not claiming to be an expert on this and am just going on what I know. I have personally taken things back to a few shops without the receipt and been able to exchange them, the shops have always taken my word that I bought the items in their store (or in a different branch of the same store). The warranty period is irrelevant if the goods do not last a reasonable amount of time prior to their failure in normal use. For example, if I bought a tv with a 12 month warranty and the tube blew after 13 months, I would be entitled to a full refund or replacement from the store I bought it from as a tv should have a lifespan longer than 13 months.

Read Martin's advice on this http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/viewnews.cgi?newsid1049409737,88838,

Citizen's Advice also has good information on http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/index/your_world/consumer_affairs/buying_goods_your_rights.htm#your_rights_when_things_go_wrong

At the end of the day, I would always go into the store and try. The worst they can say is no.

Aslo, if you bought it on credit card (as all good MSE users do) you actually are in a better position to start with, due to Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act (again, mentioned on the above page of MSE) and the retailer may actually take your credit card statement as a receipt if there's a reference number with it.

Yes, i would have thought if you could show proof of purchase via a credit card statement OR maybe a bank statement showing the debit card transaction then great, but to expect a retailer to otherwise take your word for it that you bought it there is maybe a bit much.
