Newbie - Unsure on a few tax issues

Options
:wink:Hi To Everyone. I have been looking at these pages for a while now and have now signed up.

What it is I have been told I need to complete my self assessment form for 07/08 and 09/10 due to my originals have been lost!
In these years I have worked PAYE and some jobs I used CIS as I had to due to the employes say so.
I have 80% of my wage slips showing I was paying tax at 20% but some ill be honest, ive been careless and lost them. I live in Scarborough but the tax office at Hull deals with CIS in a big way from what ive looked up on google.
So will they have all the information about my CIS? How much I payed tax and how long I was in a certain job?
It is just something I would like to know if anyone does.

Also what timescales are we talking about to get a rebate via doing an online assessment or posting the assessments to the relevant address?

Thanks for your help on this matter:j

I am currently doing a CIS incomplete records job for a client. The first thing to know is that since the "new CIS" came in - 2007 - contractors have had to file electonic returns every single month, showing who they paid - and file a nil return if they paid no-one. So in the worst case scenario you could ask the contractor.

And if it came to an inspection of my client that's what we'd do. However, his bank statements identify clearly how the money has come in from the contractor, and he has records of his materials spends, so for the 3 or 4 missing CIS chits we've been able to piece together what the gross was and what the tax was too.

CIS is all dealt with in Northern Ireland as above. If they can't help you - and I'd be surprised if they could sort everything out - then it's over to the bank statements or other method.

Rebates - money back for 08-09 and 09-10 within 3 weeks of electronic submission. Earlier years - cannot submit electronically, so join the mail queue and wait until Hell freezes over.

I'd recommend signing up with a local accountant who knows his / her way around CIS, and also paying fee protection insurance. Your industry is the one most likely to be selected for an enquiry, and if you're filing late you might was well wave a big sign saying "Hi, I've probably got missing records or other problems, come and inspect me for easy disallowances!"

    more wrong advice.

HMRC will not issue a refund for a recent year, when there is an outstanding earlier years return.

The earlier years return will be treated as an item of post, and dealt with in approx 12 weeks.

Once all the returns have been processed then you will receive a refund, not before.

Thank you for the reply. If I got an appointment at the Inland Revenue in Hull and took in the wage slips I have from my CIS slips would they be able to process my assessment? everything else is in order. Ive read on the net that the inland revenue in hull deal a lot with CIS enquirys now so im really hoping they can help me.
Does your rebate include money owed form PAYE and CIS?
Thanks again Chrismac, your help is much appreicated
  • HMRC will not complete your SA - they will guide you as to how to add up your income and expenses, but the completion of the form is down to you. Any refund due will include CIS and PAYE tax and you will need to submit your SA to your own tax office - whoever issued the form in the first place.
I think it would save you some money to go and get a bit of one-off advice from an accountant - HMRC are not there to save you tax.

I have been looking at these pages for a while now and have now signed up.

Could I seriously suggest you stick to one thread ..... and one username!

4 threads as Yellow Army and now this thread - all on the same subject and largely creating duplicated replies - isn't helping you or the people replying to you.

I don't do 'CIS' otherwise I would contribute more positively. But you are doing no-one any favours at the moment.

I only joined this site today and maybe you should look at my username. Seadogs is the nickname for Scaborough FC who I play for. So whatever rubbish you are talking about me using different usernames is complete nonsence. So please dont bother replying to me in the future.

On a brighter note thanks to everyone else for their advice and help

Must be a remarkable resemblance then between your profiles and spelling mistakes!

The two of you should meet up - as HMRC are asking you both to re-submit previous year Returns / you have both lost CIS vouchers ...... and you both share a fixation with 'how long to a refund'. You also both list your trade as 'quality control' and football as interests.

Quite remarkable - don't you think?

  • Id love to meet up with him but the only team I know who are called Yellow Army are Torquay United so it would be a little bit far just to meet up to have a chat.
    Nice idea though

From suso: "HMRC will not issue a refund for a recent year, when there is an outstanding earlier years return."

Yet they have done so in 2 cases I know of! Must be that wonderful database again.

Having given this more thought, given that in theory you must submit 07-08 before you get any refunds due:

    1. Submit 07-08 now in writing by recorded delivery based on whatever info. you have. In the notes, write "Some of these figures are estimates due to lack of information from the agencies concerned. When this information is available I will re-submit the return." Note that the chances of this note being read are about 5%, but you have started the clock ticking and covered yourself against any issues arising from a later enquiry.

    2. Once the 12 or 13 weeks are up and 07-08 is on your record, submit 08-09 and 09-10 electronically. There is now no barrier to the direct credit within three weeks of submission date.

I now retreat from this post pending a barrage of stick from the HMRC posters.
