Completely agree with Tankrizo.
The chances of your salary scheme staying final salary in your life time are freezing zero.
Also as you say it is a career progression. I completely take your point on long drive - I wouldn't mind driving every day for the right job, but if you can have better job closer to home then that is no brainer.
The only thing I would be carefull about is the size of the company and their ability to stay afloat during current crisis. If there are any signs that it might not be as strong as the current one I would firstly look at your sector, how difficult it would be to find a job if anything went wrong.
I don't know what the range of the salary offered is, but if the bottom line would be for graduate (which I doubt) I would go for the middle spot, if they are requiring some experience already (ie one step above graduate which is what you are now) I would go for about a third of the "possible" increase...
Just my personal opinion about that salary. As said before you are already going to gain the money spent on traveling and the personal time, but that has nothing to do with them wanting the right sort of person... Go in confident and strong (but not cocky) and I am sure you can get some payrise:-))

Thanks for the input. The company are a fairly reliable company with regards to job security etc and the fact that the salary band rises above what I am currently on means that I do suspect that an increase plus fuel saving is defo an option. If and only IF an offer arises then I think I will be only willing to move for a payrise and I have the figure in my head now. If nothing comes of it then happy to stay where I am.
On the other hand Ithink I will be withdrawing some of my CVs that are out and about on the internet and maybe editing a few of them so that they are a bit more anonymous. At least that way their is less chance of my company seeing them and realising that I am open to offers.
Remember, the other option open to you is to get an offer from this company and then approach your current firm to see if they will match it, should you wish to stay.
All in all, you are in a good position at the moment. :T0 -
If you are offered a new job on the same salary would you move? I wouldnt as the unknown and the risk is too high with regards to redundance etc. Obviouslly if I doubled my salary I would move in a second assuming I didnt need to move. So basically what would YOU require to make you move?

I think every individual case is different. It all depends on whether you like the company, location, benefits package, people....sometimes salary isn't the most important factor.0 -

Sorry slightly confused about the way you have worded the salary thing. If I am correct, you are saying that if the experience level for the bottom of the salary band is of a graduate experience (ie none) then you would go for the middle spot of the salary band. If the minimum experience required is higher than graduate level then you would look for a third of the way up the band.
I like this in principle however the salary band is a ridiculous band with the top being almost double the bottom! (may as well say 25k - 45k) I would have thought that I would be of limited experience for the post so bottom end, tho the knowledge is quite specific and I have all of that sorted...they are trying to expand into new markets and my degree's and experience helps. Tho the half way mark would be a huge increase in salary for me so I am setting my sghts at more like quarter way! Would still be cushdy and dont want to push my luck!Here to help and be helped!0 -

Sadly my company work in a weird way. I am aware of a number of people that have been offered other jobs and came back to the company and asked for a rise to stay and every single one got told no rise was coming as the company has a wage structure! As a result a lot of highly skilled people have left! This would seem like god management from the company with sticking to the wage structure....however they have struggled to replace employees lost and are actually an underpaying company in the whole.Here to help and be helped!0 -

That is why I said I don't know what the band is... And again, I don't know what discipline you are in so what are the average salaries in your area of expertise... then it is very difficult to judge!!

Yes thats what I was thinking. Thanks for your input, expecting to hear from them soon and then hopefully I will be in a position to negotiate. If not then back to working hard where I am just now and see if I can climb the internal ladder.Here to help and be helped!0 -
the new job and my current job are both companies part of the same group. So I am even more worried that somebody will pass my details sideways...however the company have also always said that progression may not always require you staying within the same company within the group so not sure if thats any defence.

Is this likely o be an option? How would I find out about this without letting my company know that I am looking for alternative work?
After all I didnt find out about the job through internal means?
Also would this allow my company a chance to block me moving if they didnt want me to?
