in Cutting tax
Hi I have just exchanged on a property and will be completing in a week or so's time. I will be getting a fair amount of work done to the property there's currently no kitchen (ripped out by the seller), bathrooms need doing, heating system require attention, double glazing required, removal of several internal walls etc.
The work is likely to take several months and during this time I won't be living at the property. In addition the house will be unfurnished during this period.
I have contacted my local council reference a coucil tax exemption and they have said I need to write to them but I may not get it as the work is not "major" new roof, walls being rebuilt etc.
Does anyone have any advice on the best way to structure / approach the council before I do so?
Worst case scenario I will go for the single persons rate.
Any advice re the above would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks.

TBH wth the removal of internal walls and the other work undertaken our inspectors would probably give the exemption.
If they wont give a Class A exemption then apply for a Class C exemption (unoccupied and substantiall unfurnished) for a maximum of 6 months.
You aren't eligible for a 25% single person discount as you are not resident in the property.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
Many thanks for the reply very useful.
Kind regards
