Hair...no volume and coloured..what products?

Hi all

I always used to use salon products but having been a mature student I went MSE. However I can now afford to buy salon stuff plus in all honesty fo find it lasts longer.

Anyway, I was looking for advice as to what issue I should tackle first. I have fine hair so need volume but it is also coloured so I want to protect it.

Should I get shampoo/conditioner to help the colour or get something to help the volume?? Then I could get products to deal with the volume or colour......
......I just dont know which way round to do it!

Any advice????

  • Hey,

I'm in the same boat money-wise, I'm at uni too. Have just started using Aussie volume shampoo and conditioner and it is amazing. It really works! I got it in the 2 for 6 pounds deal at Boots. My hair isn't coloured though so I can't help with that I'm afraid.

What colour hair do you have?
John Frieda do a 'volumising' version of their Sheer Blonde and Brilliant Brunette shampoo and conditioners (some are here on the Boots website but they don't seem to have as much of a range as they do in the shop http://www.boots.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CatalogSearchResultView?storeId=10052&catalogId=10551&langId=-1&pageSize=12&beginIndex=0&sType=SimpleSearch&resultCatEntryType=2&searchTerm=john+frieda+voluminsing&newDepSearch=)

I have used the volumising version of Brilliant Brunette and it's very good, give enough volume without making it coarse, it stays very silky but with more root lift. Expensive but currently on 342, you could buy it with a mousse or a deep conditioner for coloured hair?

Forgot to add, their ordinary volume shampoo and conditioners are very good too, the ones in the blue bottle. Add loads of body!

If it is blonde, I definately recommend the John Frieda volumising one, shampoo and conditioner are both good!

I use the colour protection Aussie shampoo and conditioner and it makes a difference. Maybe you could use the colour protection shampoo and the volumising conditioner?

I have coloured hair. I have tried so many coloured shampoos and conditioners but none really help the colour that much. Partially as my hair is very worn out from the many colourings and lightening products I've applied to it but also because red is a very difficult colour to maintain and it fades very very quickly anyway. OP if you have red hair it may be worth using a colour depositing shampoo as they work alot better.

Good colour depositing shampoos for red hair are very hard to find. I have not tried all of the following but would recommend the brands as I have had good experiences with the brands.
Superdrug wash-in-wash-out shampoo, 99p and pots will see you lasts for 3-5 uses. I have tried this and think its the same as the Wella shades-and-toners sachets (but you get more!) I would recommend these for a noticeable colour or just as a shampoo to keep the hair topped up.
Aveda, you have to go to the shops or online as you cannot get these in most concessions but they have shampoos and conditioners for most colours. Madder is the one for red hair. Not tried myself, they are not cheap, (£18 or £24 a bottle) but do get high ratings.
Wella Life FX, If you can get to a Sally's they have them there. You do need to leave them in for about 5 minutes every other shampoo though. Not cheap, (£10 for 250?mls) but use as a treatment not as a normal shampoo and once to twice a week.
John Freida. I think these are about £10 a 300ml shampoo and conditioner but are frequently on 3-4-2 offers but not so easy to find. They also do a treatment which glosses. I have used these a long time ago. I didn't find they left my hair very soft but did have a nice sheen to them.
Bumble and Bumble. Veeery expensive! About £18? a 250ml bottle. Ebay have them but make sure your aware of the genuine product so you don't get sold a fake, Space NK, Selfridge's and a few salons sell these. I have only tried the conditioner which was OK but I'd not rate it higher for the RRP price (I was lucky, I got mine for 99p from ebay!)

There are no doubt others out there I am unaware of but as far as helping with colour I would look for a colour depositing shampoo.

For a conditioner, this is where I'd look for volumising. Conditioners can be quite heavy and I'd say it could be this which is weighing down your hair and making it harder to get any real volume- I could be wrong but it could be a possibility to try out.
For volumising conditioners, try not to look for moisturising, I had a noticeable result with the Pureology Volume set and think they have a money-back-guarantee offer but double check this as I think it runs out in December. Again they are expensive and ebay is no cheaper, (I got mine with a Marie Claire subscription). But if you do find the money its definitely worth a try! As with most deluxe hair care, a little goes a long way and it can be more economical then you think. I definitely use less of deluxe products then high street lines.

Otherwise try the John Frieda range. I rate them for their ability to help with some frizz (admittedly not all...) so it would be my first high street choice if I were trying to get volume.

One word of advice though, Head and Shoulders is known to strip colour on the several health and beauty forums I visit. Even the range for coloured hair. By all means test it out if this is what you want to do but be aware it could result in you needing a new hair colour.

I have coloured hair and have been using Ojon hydrating and volumising shampoo and conditioner. Its amazing you can actually feel your hair getting "bigger" as you wash it. I know that sounds odd, but thats the only way I can describe it. The condition is great with this as well. :j

Its available from QVC and John Lewis.

Volume wise I found Treseme 24 hour volume to be the best hogh street brand. The only thing that stops my colour fading is washing it less.
Thank you for this site Martin
The time for change has come
    Good luck for the future
  • I have coloured fine hair. I use the Aussie products, mostly because I love the smell. I have never found much difference in volume with any shampoo/conditioner. I use JF root lift spray after washing, comb it through, rough dry my hair, then use velcro rollers of various sizes on dry hair, spray with JF blowdry lotion (blue bottle), blast with hairdryer, allow to cool down, then brush out upside down. Result - HUGE hair. I finish off with hair straighteners as I have a flicked bob. Sounds a fiddle, but takes no time at all. hth
