    Now I'm confused :)

If I am not bankrupt, which I am not, and I am Bob Holdsworth (which I am) using the business name/identity of Paintbrush Services; do I put Bob Holdsworth......Mayfair, London or do I need to put Bob Holdsworth Trading As Paintbrush Services......Mayfair, London?

    Regards

    Bob
If you want to use "trading as", then in the above case it would be "Bob Holdsworth trading as Paintbrush Services".

Not wanting to add confusion, but on business cards etc you could have the name of the business, in this case Paintbrush Services, as the main "name" and separately "proprietor Bob Holdsworth".
  • Thanks anamenottaken, I am clear up til now but would like to ask for clarification on Trading As - Do I have to use it (perhaps by Law) or is it really optional? I was under the impression from Business Link and HMRC that Trading As should be used in order to clarify that I am not a ltd company....have I been misled?

    Regards

If you're talking about leaflets and promotional material, then I believe you can just use your business name. But you must include "trading as" on all formal (legal) documents, such as invoices etc.

Thanks for all your comments so far.

Kiki: What about the wording Trading As? Would you put that or just leave it simply as Name and Address?

DVardysShadow: Interesting comments! What is your interpretation of a Half-In/Half-Out (Hanging Out) leaflet? Do you interpret this as sloppy/lazy on behalf of the company or on behalf of the messenger boy (junk mailer)? Also, what do you classify as a good leaflet.....in other words, what do you see as a positive/attention grabber/etc. Some pointers on what is best regarding leaflet dropping and making sure it does not get binned would be appreciated if you have the time.

    Regards

    Bob

I never pay attention to leaflets, they usually go straight in the (recycling) bin. The only "junk mail" that grabs my attention is when I receive a "Christmas card" style leaflet. Royal mail did this last year.

It grabs your attention because at first you think it's a genuine card from someone you know, but when you realise it's just promotional material then it does make you stop and read it properly. Obviously I can't speak for it's affect on other people.

It also doesn't have the "annoyance factor" of the usual kind of junk mail and I actually find it quite touching. In my house, it's the only type of "junk mail" that doesn't get thrown out straight away.
  • Thanks everyone, that's cleared everything up for me.

MyUserName: I will take your advice (and the advice of others on this post) and put Trading As, Business Name, Real Name and Address on formal stuff (invoices, etc) but only use Business Name and Address on the leaflets, etc.

    Thanks Again everyone.

    Regards

    Bob
