Christmas on the 'not so expensive'

  • One year when we were a bit skint we gave friends & family pressies consisting of a lot of "promises" i.e We gave my sister & her husband 2 Odeon cinema tickets & got some card & wrote in fancy letters "We promise to babysit for you whenever you want to use these tickets" my sister said that it was a really welcome gift when she stumbled across them a couple of months into the new year & fancied a night out without having to worry about babysitters! I gave a friend a bottle of wine & 2 wine glasses with a promise to "Be on hand to have a good gossip at short notice" - she loved it!! Giving a DVD is more fun if you put it in a big box with a note saying "Saturday Night In" & fill the box with popcorn, chocs & tortilla chips. Most people will understand if you haven't much money to throw around & really appreciate a little thought & imagination in their gifts. It's definitley true that "It's the thought that counts" if you try something like that you'll have great fun trying to think up imaginative inexpensive promises for people!
  • Great ideas Sluggy1967 - always nicer to get something that people have put a bit of thought into. Last year my Brother gave me an IOU for a set of taps for my new bathroom - turned out I got the taps in the bath package so he now owes them to me for whenever I get around to sorting my kitchen! :)

I always find that having less money means more creativity-and you usually end up with gifts that are far better then the ones in times of plenty.

The cinema idea is a great idea I think for my sister. She generally goes to the cinema with her friend once a week so perhaps some sort of pass. I think I'll go to the cinema and see about that. Thanks. The DVD idea sounds lovely for my Mum. I was going to get her that DaVinci's Codefilm or whatever it's called so perhaps with crisps and things will be a lovely touch. THANKS once again!

  • Hi

Just read your idea about the Harrods beer. We done something similar last year but with Harrods Wine. We bought a few bottles to give to friends it's about £6.50 per bottle, got the Harrods label and they also put it in a Harrods box for no extra charge. Some opened them to have with Christmas dinner and enjoyed being "posh". It made a change from just buying supermarket wine which is usually about £4 - £5 a bottle plus the cost of the bottle bag. So works out about the same price and looks a bit more special.

I am thinking of making a small hamper with Harrods coffee this year for a friend who is a coffee fiend. I know it will be appreciated.

    mmm.................must start planning a trip to London........soon.

    Cats.

Hm....your coffee idea sounds lovely. I actually have a friend who I usually buy for at Christmas and something like that is a wonderful idea. :T
