Slow Cooker inside

My Slow cooker - a Prima 6.5l one bought cheap in a Lakeland sale ages ago -has been brought out of retirement this week because my oven and grill are broken and the new cooker will not be arriving for 7 - 10 days. Today I made chicken casserole, but when it was ready I realised why I hadn't used it for a while. Firstly the crock pot gets this thick crusty layer all around the top of the casserole and I find that whatever I make seems to have a similar taste. It took me ages to get the crusty ring off the bowl, but even now it is clean the glaze is all gone in that area. I am going to have to use it for the next week or so and wondered if anyone else had encountered these problems. Should I get a new one?
