Money's Gone Missing

I am seeking advice on behalf of a friend who has a problem with a recent HSBC online account transfer.

My friend has a HSBC online internet account and recently he wanted to transfer money from his UK HSBC account to his Thai Bank account
he filled out the online form and things looked ok so he clicked a button to go ahead with the transfer , then a new page appeared on screen saying , please make sure the details are correct , and if they are , then click the ok button. He clicked the ok button and a new page came on screen saying that the transaction had been accepted .

some time later my friend checked his online account balance and the money had been taken from his account as requested , but noticed that there was no normal 17 pound transfer fee taken

Some days later he received a letter in the post from HSBC uk , showing that the transaction had been recorded , but my friend noticed that on this confirmation letter there was no sign of his Thai bank account number , only the Thai banks's head office bank code
and the Thai banks head office address in Bangkok.

On this HSBC confirmation letter was also a senders Reference number and my friends home address and the amount to be to
be transferred .

There was no mention of any HSBC Fee being taken ( 17 pounds ) as normally shown on a HSBC transfer letter .

So my friend thinks he made a mistake when filling out the online
transfer form and some how did not included his Thai bank account number .

What he has now done is to contact HSBC and ask them to check
where his money has gone to .

He has just received a reply from HSBC saying they will put a trace
on the transaction for 25 pounds.

The thing we can't understand is this ..

If my friend made a mistake and accidentally omitted to put his Thai bank account number ( to where the money should be transferred ) and only filled in the online form with his home address, and the Thai Bank's head office details and code , why did the online form accept the transaction , when there was no account numbers filled in at all .

my friend admits he made a mistake , but surly the HSBC system should have said - No we cannot go ahead with your transfer request as there's no bank account numbers shown.

An thoughts or advice on this situation would be most welcome

Thanks
