HELP Halloween outfit please

Hi I am a VERY large lady, there I said it! We have been invited to friends next week for a halloween dinner party. What do I wear. My mind has gone blank and yet usually I have tons of ideas. I dont have clothes to shred so where do I start. I do have approx 20m white muslin from my daughters wedding, a long white skirt and white top I could wear underneath an overlay so I had thought of a zombie/ghost. Any ideas? Not sure if my plan will work so seeking help here.
I have recently gained over 4st which had taken me ages to loose so self esteem is low. I want to wear something practical, to a certain extent as I am clumsy enough being this fat, about size 28/30. I could cry but won't, at least not today.:embarasse

I am more than capable with sewing machine and have at least 2 free days this week.

Please:cry:

  • Have you thought of going as an angel? If you can attach some floaty bits of muslin to an existing skirt and top to make it look floaty, then make some wings and a small halo - voila, an angel.

    Hi

First off, don't worry about your size - there are plenty of options available for plus sizes. The trick is to find the look that makes you most comfortable and shows off your best assets!

As a closet fancy-dress addicts, my partner and I have discovered that the accessories and make-up are what will make an outfit; you can buy a pre-made costume, but they never look as good as they do in the picture, and will always look like a pre-made costume (plus you run the risk of turning up to a party with someone else wearing the same thing!).

Think about the style of dress that you are most comfortable in - be it something that shows off a bit of cleavage, or cinches in under the boobs, or something that is less fitted, but flowing. Start with a basic white cotton/linen and add some gauze or netting for an ethereal effect. Long, tapered sleeves give a really gothic look. You can then customise this with a some flecks of red paint/dye to give a blood-stained effect.

That's the costume side done -simple, but effective.

It's the hair, make-up and accessories that will really give your look the wow-factor. Most people think it's enough to turn up to a do wearing a plastic witches hat. You need to raise the bar If you are going for the gothic-bride sort of look it doesn't hurt to think a little bit drag-queen and give some galmour; after all, it's Halloween, not a Christmas Ball! More is definitely more! Think about what hair/make-up/accessories a bride usually has and switch the colours so white becomes grey, red becomes scarlet/ochre/dark red. A pale face, grey blusher/make-up for the cheekbones, and dark lips and eyes will make for good ghostly features, and some false nails to match the lipstick will really make it pop. Some sparkly black and grey eye-shadow and some false lashes (not the feathery ones) would be good as well.

A cheap diamant! necklace and earrings will add a touch of glamour, and if you have longer hair, a ringlet-style will really make you look the business, or there's always back-coming for that dragged-through-a-hedge-backwards manic look. For shorter hair you can use a wig, but you may get a bit hot and bothered.

Finish off with a diamant! alice band to hold on a bit of netting for a veil - you can also use some of the spider-webbing that they sell in ASDA and Tesco to embellish and give a hint of "fresh from the crypt".

Sounds like a lot of work, but it will be worth it! You are going to look fabulous!

    Hope that helps! :j

They both help tons. I know I shouldn't worry about these friends as we have known some of them 40+ years but just sometimes its nice to think wow, even if only for my costume.
I actually like the idea of the veil and we actually have a spare one here, deamaged.. long story, from my daughters wedding 8 weeks ago, I could certainly use the top layer of that as it fastens to main layer with just velcro. Thank you thank you

  • how about a mummy? you could sew bandages (or strips of muslin) to the skirt and to a plain white t shirt, put some over your head/face, leave some trailing down loose too. you could wear flip flops, or white socks. then add things to you i.e. take a sewing basket wrapped in bandages if you are known for sewing, or knitting needles wrapped in white!

get a cheap, plus size wedding dress from charity shop or ebay with veil, and drench in fake blood, wear a veil with one of those knives sticking out the side of your head, and blood dripping down, and get some white roses and dip in fake blood for your bouquet. Voila, murdered bride outfit.!! Ha ha.

What about Medusa if you have lots of white material perhaps you fashion some type of toga dress making its as long or short as you feel comfortable with. Green wig maybe? Seen in Argos for £5 and put rubber snakes in and then you could white make up for your face with smokey eyes and dark lippy.

Hope you have a fab time whatever you decide to dress up as:j
For thousands of people this Christmas, their must-have gift is far more vital than the latest gadget or toy – it’s blood. Please don’t let the festivities and cold weather prevent you from giving them the ultimate gift… give blood.

You may walk and you may run
You leave your footprints all around the sun
And every time the storm and the soul wars come
    You just keep on walking
