NHS casual contract - pregnant and sacked

I agree, I think what's in the contract is key here.

We have some staff on zero hours, and when I see they haven't done any for 3 months I ask their manager if they want to stay on the books or not.

Also you state that they 'should have' received your letter, because you hand delivered it. Sometimes, even if you can hand deliver, it's best to send it by recorded delivery so there's a signature to say it was received. Either that or phone the next day to confirm it HAS been received.
