I would recommend AAT. You could start by looking at the AAT Bookkeeping certificate which you can do online. If you passed this and felt confident enough you could then go to college perhaps even starting at Level 3 of AAT ( was called intermediate )Alternatively wait and start at level 2. There are big changes from this year with most assessment being computer based.
Hi Spike, thank you for your response :)
I don't suppose you could recommend a distance learning college to do the AAT Bookkeeping course? I have googled it, but there seem to be loads.
If anyone has any personal experience of distance learning providers i would love to hear from you!

Oldernotwiser, wouldn't i start out at the same place whether i wanted to be an accounting technician or an accountant?

  • Hi Cheeks,

The providers that often get mentioned on the AAT forums is Premier Training, Eagle Education, Kaplan and BPP amongst others. Personally I'm with Kaplan (studying level 4) and I've heard they are similar to BPP. Overall Kaplan is good, but essentially, as with distance learning providers, it's you that has to put the effort in. Tutors are there if you are stuck or need advice but I've often found reading around the subject gets all the info i need.

I'd say that if you want to get into accountancy, the biggest impact on your CV is to get some experience (whether it be credit control, purchase ledger or general accounts admin) and combine it with a course. If you then decide to go on to higher levels then the experience will compliment your studies and vice versa.

Try having a look at the AAT forums on the AAT website as there are sections for people on specific levels and they can be quite useful. :)

Hi cheeks, I'm also with Kaplan and am pleased with them, on the rare occasion I've needed a tutor's help they've done the job. I would say you do need to be very disciplined with yourself as I find it hard not to let it fall by the wayside! Good luck whatever you decide.

Thank you all so much for sharing your knowledge and experience with me.
Just to confuse me even further i have found out that my local college do a city & guilds course in Bookkeeping and Accounts.
During all the reading i have done about training in accounts i haven't read anything about City & Guilds qualifications. Does anyone know if this would be a sensible place to start?
