As for the matrix, all you need to do is flush it with a hose pipe.....

Cheers optimus...car going in for a basic service (good old wilco!-my local lot are great-most honest mechanics I've come accross!)-how much do you think they'd charge to flush the matrix-is it a long job??? Sorry....I'm not at all technical!!
  • Took me 10 minutes to do one on an old Nissan Bluebird yrs ago.Undo the hoses from the heater matrix pipes, affix water hose, flush away .......

Right behind the inlet manifold, and those stupid spring clips instead of jubilee clips. The other ends vanish down and under the engine, so even harder that way.
So an hours labour, new anti freeze, and a couple of new clips.
    £75 ish

    Hey guys/gals,

In for it's basic Wilco Service today....they've done some 'flushing' (??!) & are fairly sure its the heater matrix &/or the heater controls. As it'll be a long, fiddly job to find out what it is I'll probably leave it until I can get to e.anglia for a technical mate (!) to look at it.....might 'risk' a ciggy lighter type thing...in fact I think my local wilco will let me plug it in & try it before I buy it!

BUT.....rear axle wear (causing whhel to catch apparently) & the front anti roll bracket has gone! So...after the shock (!) I phoned around for some 2nd hand axles with short guarantees....got one for £60. Wilco will fit i & the anti roll bracket for £130-which I think is quite good. It never rains but it pours! Phoned another couple of places & much dearer...unfortunately need car urgently for Weds am to drive to an airport & been told that car is dangerous to drive...so getting work done tomorrow. I COULD risk a 140 mile round trip to airport & a 150 mile round trip to e anglia to get axle fitted free by a mate....but I feel its too dangerous....will update with any news on nthe cars progress & if i try the 12volt car heater!!

Hey all...well heater still not fixed. Did a 130 round trip run today & it came on v. slightly (luke warm-but mainly out of 1 vent on the dashbord!)...mechanics flushed system but said it's either a knackered/blocked matrix OR the control flaps don't open properly...

Risked £17-99 on a WILCO 12v (150w) heater/fan-have to say I'm very pleased with it! Granted-it'll never replace a car heater BUT provides instant, constant warm heat (allbeit not pushed out strongly) so ideal on the colder winter days. My sisters B/F is a car nut & loves 'puzzles' to do with cars so maybe a trip 'darn sarf' is called for!

The axle....(!) After much ringing around got a 2nd hand axle with 1 month guarantee for £60! Some places that were sold out were charging £125 if in stock so pleased with that... £130 inc vat to fit & bleed breaks etc....car feels SO different! I'm pretty pleased with the price as some places were charging £200+ for fitting!

    Again-thanks all for time/trouble of replying!

tbh on a p plate 106 I'd not spend the money getting the heating fixed, I'd get a 12v cigarette lighter run heater... how are you going to drive in the winter with freezing windows without one?;)

http://www.dcp-shop.co.uk/buy-car-accessories/product_info.php?products_id=13175 the first one that came up on Google was £20.
