Help with mortgage Referral

first time on here guys and really need advice.
at the moment I'm in the process of trying to get a joint mortgage with the Halifax, which at first was referred then declined. Reason being and i only found this out last week is that i have a CCJ against me. on calling the court i was told it was because when i left my last employer in 2006 i was over paid on my final wage. so we paid the outstanding amount plus an extra £200 that the court asked for??? we now have proof back to say this was satisfied. we called the Halifax and they said they now need a letter from my old employer (DSG) saying that the non payment was not intentional. iv called them today and they said its basically there word against mine and cant send anything else out as the receipt should be enough. so my question is how do we prove this was not intentional and that this is the first iv heard about it?????
Any advice would be amazing, thanks
